Makoto Yuki 1/8 (HappyKuji)Makoto Yuki 1/8 (HappyKuji)Review

Let me preface this review by saying that Persona 3 is easily one of, maybe even, my favorite games of all time. So keeping that in mind, I’ll try to be as least biased as possible.

To coincide with release of the first Persona 3 Movie, HappyKuji decided to run a lottery of Persona 3 Movie merchandise, one of which, is a figure of the Persona 3 protagonist, Makoto Yuki (formerly known as Minato Arisato), the figure I’m reviewing today. I stumbled upon this figure in Japan, and being the Persona 3 fanboy that I am, gleefully picked it up. Do keep in mind that this is a prize figure, so when it comes to the quality of the figure, I have to keep realistic expectations.

The pose, in my opinion, is a missed opportunity. Makoto is holding up his evoker (For those of you who haven’t played the game, that’s the gun)…but unfortunately, not to his head. That is a great shame. How great would it have been for Makoto to have the gun up against his head, ready to summon his persona? That is one of the iconic Persona 3 images, after all. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with his current pose, it’s just a little dull compared to what it could have been. Despite that, there are some nice touches with Makoto’s jacket, ribbon tie and MP3 player fluttering to give a sense of motion.

The level of detail on Makoto and all his assets are impressive, especially when you consider he’s a prize figure. All of his iconic accessories are here and impressively detailed. The S.E.E.S armband, Gekkoukan high logo on his uniform, headphones, mp3 player, holster and his evoker, are all there. The figure is well and truly faithful to the source material.

Makoto’s expression is a bit blank, although you could argue that’s just being faithful to the source material. It personally didn’t bother me as, having played through Persona 3 multiple times, I have come accustomed to seeing Makoto with a blank expression.

The paint job on the figure was for the most part, extremely well done. Personally, I found the colour of his skin to be just a tiny bit too yellow. In my opinion, it should have been slightly paler, that being said, I found him to look better in different lighting conditions, so it varies.

I’m sure this is just an issue with my figure, but the paint of his left foot is slightly scratched. Everything else is top notch, especially when it comes to his uniform and assets

The base is a black, glossy octagon with the Persona 3 The movie logo. Although it’s not exactly elaborate, I think it’s appropriate and, in my opinion, doesn’t make the figure feel cheap, like some prize figure bases. However, keep in mind that being black and glossy means that dust and fingerprints will be more prominent.

The box adopts the same colour scheme as the other promotional material for the movie. I’m not sure if it was intentional or not, but I did find it appropriate, and actually quite humorous that the window of the box is shaped like a coffin. That will make sense to you if you’ve played the game.

I purchased this figure for 2980 Yen, which I feel is a great price. Personally, I wouldn’t buy this figure for any more than 3500, maybe 4000 Yen, depending on his availability.

In conclusion, I think this is a great prize figure, however it could have been better. If you happen to be a fan of Persona 3 like myself and can find this figure at a reasonable price, I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t burn your dread, and pick him up.

JordanBu4 år siden#5847347I just ordered him for 3000 yen (total with shipping) and I was like nooooo don't spend money on a prize figure but your review gave me confidence that I made a great purchase. You are right, the other figures of him out there are too small, too expensive and hence not worth it. But this one really is <3

Thank you! As much as I wish we had an Alter masterpiece of the character, we don't, and if you ask me, this is still the best alternative out there! At least for the money. Thanks for reading! :D

G-Rave6 år siden#1942986Well since there are just 3 scales\prizes of Minato\Makoto, a P3 fan shouldn't miss that one anyway.
Kotobukiya's Minato is the best, but he's pretty small and damn expensive now.
Bandai's Minato is ok, but totally not worth 6-8k yen. Too small and lacks detail (though looks cool paired with Thanatos and Elizabeth, matching scales and all)
The kuji one is big, looks nice, and cheap. Totally worth the price.
and I love how _small_ his base is )

You're pretty much spot on. While in Japan I never encountered Bandai's scale figure, however, i did come across Kotobukiya's and, although he looked nice, I found him to be a bit too small and expensive, in comparison to this figure. If you wanted a Makoto figure,I'd recommend this one, due to his size and prize.
