Nendoroid #489 - Kageyama Tobio // ReviewNendoroid #489 - Kageyama Tobio // Review

Hello!!

After a few weeks of break (no P-O came in T_T), I finally come back with super cute nendoroid review! I’ve been waiting for this one for so long to complete the pair! And seriously, I can’t wait for other ones from the same series to get released/announced too!

So the spotlight today is our little king, Kageyama Tobio Nendoroid, the prodigy setter in Haikyuu!~

So let’s quickly jump at the review today…

I received the Nendoroid from Tokyo Otaku Mode, wrapped up in a bunch of brown/white paper, in a box a whole level larger than what it needed to be. The good thing from that is that the box came unscattered, and it probably had a chance of 0.000001% of that even happening. And bad thing is, well, a lot of waste of paper and takes up a lot of space when I don’t unbox it right away.

https://s5.postimg.org/gaor8rfp3/IMG_7717.jpg

As you can see, the box is very similar to Shoyo’s, used with the same theme colors, but reverse. Also, I found that Kageyama’s box turned out a bit darker than what I had expected, you might not notice it in this picture, but the picture of Kageyama at the front looks darkened and of lower quality compared to Hinata’s.

On the following picture of the entire box, you can see the glossy material that made the volleyballs stand out at the front of the box, the entire thing is actually matte, similar pattern of gloss/matte used for Devil Homura and the Kill La Kill nendoroids.

https://s5.postimg.org/npe3151kn/box.jpg

The far right picture of Kageyama (from that famous scene!!!), turned out pretty bad because of the shadow effect they added at the front of his face, to my opinion. His box was already dark themed, and the addition of the shadows and dark weird layer of matte makes the box look a bit bootleg’ish?

https://s5.postimg.org/s17a3vxvb/IMG_7725.jpg

Emptied the box of its contents, the cardboard inside is the same as the most nendoroids, a plain color with their number written in the middle, and comes along is the instruction booklet that I quickly took a picture of.

https://s5.postimg.org/87v6b6khj/IMG_7775.jpg

O_O

And there’s the most important and meaningful part of the box!

So our little king’s extra parts comes with :

- 8 arm parts (plus 4 shoulder sleeves parts)
- 2 leg parts
- 2 faceplates
- 1 mini crown
- 1 volleyball
- 1 effect part
- 1 net pole
- 1 net (more like half of a net haha)
- Complete stand set that includes a peg, base, 1 peg arm for the nendoroid and 1 peg arm for the volleyball.
- One extra joint.

Mini Kageyama doesn’t come with a lot of accessories, but he does have a good amount of arm and leg parts to make up for it. I actually found it unnecessary for extra accessories since the volleyball and mini crown are already more than enough to represent this little boy.

https://s5.postimg.org/j8qbg7cqf/IMG_7779.jpg

Before I start with anything else… let me point out that there’s something different about Tobio compared to other nendoroids… =) I’ll come back to it in a few sentence and have a mini tiny cliffhanger if you hadn’t found out yet~

So these are all the pieces of his standard nendoroid… His arms are detachable from the sleeves as expected. I had quite some trouble removing the joint from the neck plate so I gave up, just to let you know that it’s there, and probably easier to remove for most of you lucky people =)

Now, if you look closely at the piece between his hip and torso, it’s actually a joint! I was quite happy I found this out (I don’t think I even noticed it with Hinata’s nendoroid, but he does have it too), it actually gives a tiny more freedom to rotate the hips in all directions, but nothing exaggerated, it’s just there to enhance a pose’s look.

https://s5.postimg.org/6npucsc3b/IMG_7836.jpg

Here’s the re-assembled standard pose of Kageyama. He wears his usual emotionless facial expression as the main faceplate (somehow, during the anime, sometimes I just think he looks like he’s pouting…. Is it just me? XD). His standard nendoroid pose also gives him a confident look and posture, with his straight up body and hands held into small - cute - fists.

https://s5.postimg.org/41abvukvr/IMG_7806.jpg

Oh my god… the nendoroid looks absolutely flawless at this angle, doesn’t it?! And the peg was super easy to fit in too, perfect fit! Though somehow… I felt like his standard face was a tiny bit less matte than Hinata’s standard faceplate, maybe missing like one or two matte finish layer..

Nonetheless, he looks adorable!

A little note, the transparent stand base didn’t come with him, it’s actually just a random one I grabbed from another nendoroid.

https://s5.postimg.org/5ud8k662f/IMG_7814.jpg

Still looks good like this. Hm… Is it only me that thinks about high heels when I look at his tiny pointy shoes? Hehe

The folds on his shirt look so well sculpted from the side!

As you can see, the peg arm is a 3 pieces instead of a 2 pieces, which makes it easier for some in-air poses like a high jump pose.

https://s5.postimg.org/pq97zpn3r/IMG_7822.jpg

Everything still looks good at this angle. One sad thing is that the peg hole is right in the middle of his back, where his number 9 is written as well, which is quite a saddening thing since I thought how great it’d be if we could’ve seen his entire team uniform in its fullest. I would feel more complete with it, but what else can we do about it? I don’t think he could hold very well in the hair if a magnetic stand (like Menma’s) was used, even if he did, I’d be too afraid he’d drop dead…

https://s5.postimg.org/gjqxcfhvb/IMG_7828.jpg

Look at the nice curves of his hanging shirt~ Good sculpt detailing of his hair too. I like how much work GSC put onto small details like the bottom ends of his back hair, which I find is so nicely made for something we’d barely notice.

https://s5.postimg.org/xa2b1rgaf/IMG_7847.jpg

Now let’s have a closer look at his face.

The lighting in the picture might be misleading, but the top front of his hair actually has a dark blue highlight gradient, which is a bit lighter than his entire hair piece, which can be seen at the back of his hair too.

Also, his eyebrow turned a bit greenish in this picture (or maybe it only my screen calibration?), but it’s actually a similar color as his eye balls.

https://s5.postimg.org/m1o4dz2gn/IMG_7875.jpg

Ah… such nice carefully sculpted details on his hair~

On another part, the orange paint on his collar went over a bit the shirt D= The orange paint edge is also very uneven, given that we can see feathering on the edge.

https://s5.postimg.org/cr7ewp2d3/IMG_7866.jpg

(This has nothing to do with Haikyuu really… but I think he reminds me of Eren from Shingeki no Kyojin from the side like this…)

Same problem that I pointed out just a picture earlier… but seriously, this is much better than the last nendoroid I reviewed.

If you look carefully at the bangs closest to his ear, it seems like it’s a bit chipped off. I was very careful handling him, and obviously didn’t knock him or drop him anywhere… So I suppose that this is a manufacturing defect that got on this specific one (I wouldn’t like to think that they dropped the piece on the ground though…)

https://s5.postimg.org/rbt359mpj/IMG_7870.jpg

We can see so much detail on the strands of hair! The white design on the collar surprisingly has no flaws on it!

https://s5.postimg.org/wprvctcfr/IMG_7883.jpg

A bit of a closer look on his arms and legs and torso. As usual, you can see a tiny bit of paint bleed here and there, like on the collar of the right (as mentioned earlier), a tinsy bit on his knee pads and a bit on the shoe on the right side of the picture, but they were surprisingly very minor, which really made me happy of the better quality, and what surprised me the most is that the white outline were practically perfect this time, just that the one joining on the left collar is printed a bit off….

It was pretty hard to get it in the picture with the right lighting, but his shoe actually has laces sculpted on them as well, which added to the detailing.

https://s5.postimg.org/6iqoguu5z/IMG_7886.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/in5xxu71z/IMG_7905.jpg

We see a bit of orange on the white line on his shirt… and a bit of dark blue on the white line of his shorts… T_T Also note the white line design overlapping onto the orange collar.

Alright, so I suppose that this’ll be enough for the standard pose… Let’s get to something a bit different!

https://s5.postimg.org/deawzyomv/IMG_7925.jpg

King Tobio! How adorable does he look like this X3 I totally imagine him with a cape as well, flowing behind him.

https://s5.postimg.org/hby6pdbg7/IMG_7933.jpg

Oops…. Seems like I didn’t fix his arm properly…

https://s5.postimg.org/evwdbitdj/IMG_7942.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/cepo1dfsn/IMG_7946.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/3xq5qgb3r/IMG_7950.jpg

Ohhh! You can see the blue highlight in his hair here~ Nice blue that matches with the shades of his eyes.

As you see, the paint on the crown is pretty well done, for something this small and detailed!

https://s5.postimg.org/ii78la62f/IMG_7954.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/9boxy00tz/IMG_7962.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/w2y0kelvb/IMG_7982.jpg

Oooh! Super dynamic pose!

https://s5.postimg.org/skm0o0kzb/IMG_7988.jpg

The paint on the knee pads of his alternate legs actually looks better than the standard ones.

https://s5.postimg.org/f4yzykchj/IMG_7998.jpg

The mini volleyball looks really nice too! And seems like the shoe detail on his shoes are pretty well done on these legs too.

https://s5.postimg.org/e3yr9fvhz/IMG_8040.jpg

He looks like he’s ready to smash the volleyball!

https://s5.postimg.org/f7ivleg53/IMG_8072.jpg
He looks so serious and confident!!

https://s5.postimg.org/mc5a86cs7/IMG_8074.jpg

Shoot some arrows!!! - Um, I mean, shoot some volleyballs!

His fingers look so small and round and cute~

https://s5.postimg.org/s1lishiyf/IMG_8078.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/pyb3ktj5j/IMG_8081.jpg

Second pair of legs that were in the box were used in this pose, and yup, way better-painted than the first ones.

https://s5.postimg.org/9okxhx8hj/IMG_8085.jpg

Well, not the greatest work is on this side of his shorts. At least they bothered to put a little indent on the bottom of the shoe for detail!

https://s5.postimg.org/r355q75mf/IMG_8092.jpg

I took this pose from the pictures on the box, but I just had to add the little crown to him, it just looks totally right!

https://s5.postimg.org/e09j6xfef/IMG_8096.jpg

Honestly… It took me a while to figure out which part was the arm that held his volleyball, but turns out it was the same one as the smashing pose…

https://s5.postimg.org/r9iutaerb/IMG_8120.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/i88wtf67r/IMG_8151.jpg

=O That famous scene!!! I still can’t believe that actually made a faceplate and arm part for this scene! Well, it was very likely it’d happen since it’s a pretty memorable and popular scene from the anime, but to see it with the real nendoroid is a whole different thing.

And finally a look at a second faceplate~

https://s5.postimg.org/85u4qorav/IMG_8135.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/7hla7qsl3/IMG_8137.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/ytgj92xbr/IMG_8146.jpg

Scary… Very well made simple face ^.^ couldn’t have imagined Kageyama without this haha

https://s5.postimg.org/czdvvjnsn/IMG_8156.jpg

A pass! Look at all the power he put in that ball!

https://s5.postimg.org/k3vp4kv1z/IMG_8169.jpg

The effect part actually has a little part sticking out to fix the volleyball on it to stabilize it.

https://s5.postimg.org/ire02oxmf/IMG_8182.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/nrg1odsmv/IMG_8191.jpg

That intense look! He's gonna get it! Do your best little Kageyama! ;P

https://s5.postimg.org/x5lz868tz/IMG_8250.jpg

So cute and happy!

It’s actually very similar to Hinata’s happy face, only that mini Tobio’s teeth show entirely, compared to Hinata’s big smile is wide open.

Such a happy face!

Overall, I think that the choice of design made for this nendoroid were really well chosen, as usual. The standard faceplate used for Kageyama is really representative of his personality, that doesn’t smile a lot and constantly looks like he’s in a sorta “bad” mood. I really liked the second faceplate, which was taken from the popular and hilarious scene of Haikyuu! Parts were created to recreate that scene and it is very fun to play around with it in different situations. The last faceplate is the one for a victory, and looks absolutely adorable, especially next to the happy and smiling Hinata! This gives mini Kageyama quite a good amount of variation of different expressions, compared to most nendoroids ; a neutral/serious expression, a mad expression along with a very happy one.

The volleyball team uniform itself was quite simple, so I don’t think they’ve made any nendoroid adjustment to it, which is quite good that they kept the original design of the shirt without removing any details. Also, he also came with a good variety of additional limb parts, which gives us a wider range of position to put him in.

On a second hand, the painting on this nendoroid really surprised me compared to the last reviewed one. Except for the tiny paint overlay on the collar and a very minor bit on the white lines and knee pads and shoes, it didn’t turn out as bad as I’ve expected. Though it is sad that the side of his bangs had to get chipped off… even by a bit.

The detailing was pretty well done as well since they even put the small string’ish detail on the shorts, as well as the folds on the clothing. The laces on the shoe a not very obvious due to its same color with the shoe, but it’s a detail that GoodSmile certainly didn’t fail to include.

To conclude this review, I can pretty much say that the Kageyama nendoroid I received is pretty good quality compared to the last nendoroids I reviewed. But this nendoroid also has lesser details, so I suppose I can’t get too happy about it yet. Though I can’t say that I didn’t have fun playing around with his nendoroid, you can put him in all sorts of positions with his different extra parts and facial expression.

shiromikuro (3 år siden) #3066999It's true that they're quite simple, but to be honest, I really don't know why, but something about Hinata's nendoroid really makes him stand out (his hair probably), and it's one of my favorite nendoroids too. But really, the detailing that they put in his hair (compared to most nendoroid) is really something!

Haha Yes, must be Hinata's bright and spiky hair. I like the details and the shading they did on it. And perhaps his really adorable face plates, too? XD I couldn't resist not getting him despite the really steep after-market price after seeing those expressions. orz

Tiburon (3 år siden) #3084399The last picture is so cool!I really want to know how you make the backdrop so realistic? Is it made by your computer wallpaper?
I didn't really do anything special actually, I just put the image full screen on my computer and took a picture with everything together. I guess the blur on it also helped it look more realistic? xD

llmakotoll (3 år siden) #3066263Haha yes, that's true. Although it was a very pleasant surprise for me when I noticed it. :)
He's my second Nendoroid (Hinata being the first) and I just can't help but be in awe at all the details they've included in this figure. And people say he's one of the simpler ones! I'm prolly too easy to please? XD;;

shiromikuro (3 år siden) #3052953Thanks ^_^ I suppose it's because the dark blue gradient on his hair is too similar to the main hair color, so unless it's well lit, we won't see much difference T_T

shiromikuro (3 år siden) #3051513There's a piece of hard plastic (attached to the crown) that can be put in between the two hair pieces =)

Thank you for this! I've been wanting Kageyama for a while now so I could get his mini crown and attach it to other nendos, but wasn't sure how it stayed on!

llmakotoll (3 år siden) #3052032Wonderful review! I greatly enjoyed seeing all the pictures you've posted and reading your detailed description~ I also liked how you mentioned the variety in his face plates and the details in his cute little shoes (especially the shoe laces). I was surprised when I noticed the shoelaces and found them really adorable. The gradient on his hair is also awesome! I think you won't really notice it until you're in a well-lighted area/room? I only realized there's some gradient on his hair when I moved to a well-lighted room and started posing him. XD;;
I think this made me even more excited for Noya and Oikawa... orz
I hope GSC releases them soon~~~
