MAGIC KNIGHT RAYEARTH
Hikaru Shidou
(Break Prize)

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373602.jpeg

Despite Magic Knight Rayearth being about three girls saving a world of fantasy (Cephiro) it is unquestionable that a great weight of the story falls upon Hikaru Shidou. Given her fiery spirit and vibrant personality, she’s the one to take the lead in many situations, and…

View spoilerHide spoilerand the one who would ultimately become the savior of the world.

I only came to know the word “waifu” this year. When I understood what it meant, I found this red-haired girl had been my waifu for some 20 years. I really loved her. And after finding our birthdays were just 1 day apart, my crush for her only grew stronger.

This figure is coded as Break SP figure Vol. 3, meaning she was the last of the Magic Knights to be released. So far, and until the Figmas (or a proper set of scale figures) are released, this is the first and only Hikaru figure in 20 years.

Box

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373603.jpeg

If you already own this set of figures, or if you’ve read my previous reviews (Umi BLOG #23615 and Fuu BLOG #23920 ), you already know the design of the box is nothing really special. Which is sad, because the visual treatment given to the boxes does not honour properly the figures themselves, and is far from the visuals used in other merchandise products when Magic Knight Rayearth was in fashion.

Probably not the better boxes to display, but still better than nothing at all (you just can’t imagine how much we suffered for so many years without official merchandise).

Packaging

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373604.jpeg

As with the other figures in this set, Hikaru comes carefully packed inside a plastic bag, which is itself contained inside a bubble wrap. She arrived without scratches or any other noticeable defects.

Inside the box there were two swords. At first I thought they would be different. But upon closer inspection I found them to be identical.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373605.jpeg
This unexpected packing mistake means that probably a figure out there is without a sword… and that me, liking so much this sword as I like it, am doubly happy :D

As usual, the base is protected in a simple plastic bag. It depicts Rayearth’s crest, and matches Umi’s and Fuu’s bases. Unlike Fuu, the foot support is already attached to the base. I found that attaching Hikaru’s foot to the support was not easy. I used some warm hairdryer to soften the plastic, and then it work effortlessly. But once cooled, it just won’t come off. If for any reason you are to disassemble the figure you need to be very careful in this part.

Pose
I’ve read some comments about this figure’s pose to be somehow weird. I myself thought it was unusual. Then I found this image in the first artbook:

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373612.jpeg
This is Hikaru and her “Flame Arrow” spell.

As you can see, the pose of the figure is heavily based on it, but it is not exactly the same. It is interesting to note that while Umi and Fuu were based mainly on Atsuko Ishida’s illustrations, this time Hikaru was based on the original artwork drawn by Mokona.

It is really difficult to judge the pose. The figure can be displayed without the fire sword, as if she’s launching her attack spell; or with the sword, as if caught in the middle of the action. She looks fine either way, but much better with the sword.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373613.jpeg
If a special fire effect were added to the figure she would look awesome.

Sculpting
Of all three figures, Hikaru falls just behind Umi and Fuu in terms of quality. While the previous figures in this set had finely detailed fingernails, Hikaru doesn’t have any. The boots don’t look so attractive as compared to the other figures. The bow tie looks too flat, and the sailor collar too thick.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373614.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373615.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373616.jpeg

However, the armor, face, and cloth details are still on par with those of the other Knights, as you’ll see in detailed photos below.

The sword is just beautiful. The intricate details are nicely achieved.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373621.jpeg
The sword is again based on Mokona’s design, and it matches very closely the original illustration. But the blade is a bit too short.

The Hair
Hikaru’s hair is naturally wild. Shorts strands always flowing as if representing fire.

As you can see in the photos below, the lack of fine and sharp detail in the sculpting of her hair distract a bit from the concept. Hikaru’s hair in this figure is not completely attractive. The mold defects and dust in the painting add a bit of dirtiness to her head.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373623.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373624.jpeg

Unlike Umi and Fuu, white highlights were heavily sprayed on Hikaru’s hair. Which resulted in a strange blend of white-to-pink color. She doesn’t look natural at all. Sadly this paint work was not careful. I wonder if dry-brushing the highlights had resulted in a better looking hair.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373625.jpeg

Scale
Hikaru’s official height is 145 cm (4' 9'').
At 17,5 cm, this figure’s scale is 1/8,2
She’s approximately the same height as Umi and Fuu. And that may look strange when displaying them together, since proportions are completely lost (Hikaru is the shortest of them all by 10 cm / 4in. in real life).

Painting
Painting was not so perfect as in the other figures. There is more bleeding, and some stray paint speckles in several places.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373632.jpeg
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373633.jpeg

The skirt is nicely done. And the paint on it feels soft while being matte too.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373634.jpeg

The hand molding shows some noticeable seam lines.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373636.jpeg

The sword is very small, and its details are surely hard to paint at this scale. It actually looks great in person.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373637.jpeg

As always, frilly underwear.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373638.jpeg
The legs feel very soft, and have a subtle shading. Nice legs indeed.

A big and unusual gap between the shoulder and back plate of the armor.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373635.jpeg

The face...
I'm still not completely satisfied with Hikaru's face in this figure. Or maybe I'm too hard evaluating her since she's my favorite character, and I wanted her to be perfect.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373639.jpeg

Be careful when assembling the sword. It is very delicate, and may break easily.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/09/13/1373640.jpeg

Although repetitive (one foot on the ground, bent knee) the pose is still quite dynamic. And her outstretched arms make her body look really nice.

Enjoyment
This figure is not bad at all. While the small details distract a bit, she’s really nice and looks great when displayed. She’s a wonderful addition to the MKR set.

She may not be at the level of a scale figure, but for a Hikaru fan in particular (or any Rayearth fan in general), this is a good figure to consider. For the price you pay, you get a decent figure that will look fine on your shelf. And it may be better to have them all three as the team they are.

I think she looks really nice for a prize figure, but I understand your disppointment. You got really lucky with 2 swords and I hope that indeed not someone else is missing one. D:

To be honest I'm very disappointed on Hikaru's quality, I was expecting her to be even better than Umi and Fuu, being the last one to be released plus being the lead in the series, her hair is terrible :( but oh well this is a prize figure and things like these happen. The most amazing thing is when you have the trio of magic knights, they look AMAZING! And the nostalgia is even stronger :'D all those quality mistakes can be forgiven cos these figures are truly a part of our childhood and we deserve more figures of such a great manga and anime by CLAMP. (So sad there's no Mokona with them)
Thanks for the review Ruben, I know you're truly happy and the reviews were fantastic :)
Thanks for the memories :'D

Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you liked the reviews :3 I love Rayearth a lot, and was surprised nobody made a review of they before. I had made a video review of the rubber straps before in the Facebook fanpage, but not here.

I believe this figures are good concepts. If a proper scale were made, this would be a good guideline (provided they correct the mistakes). Let's hope that happens sometime in the future. They certainly deserve it.

Having them together is really great. The complement each other nicely :)

Now that you mention Mokona... I haven't tried, but I guess ITEM #222478 could be the best companion. Looks like the right size!

Un abrazo, que tengas un bonito resto de semana :D

mickeydeerho5 år siden#3460851I was looking forward to your review and aweosme work, as usual.
Nice on the bonus sword, ha. The trio looks great together and I wouldn't buy just one individual "best girl" figure when it comes to MKR. All or nothing.
Yea, "waifu" is just on some internet speak. Shoot, I've had fictional character crush for Chun Li for over 20 years as well.

Thanks for your kind words.

I also like to buy them all. Although my favorite is Hikaru, there is no doubt the team should be kept together, they're all great :)
