Mikazuki Munechika (Awakened Ver.) by Orange Rouge!Mikazuki Munechika (Awakened Ver.) by Orange Rouge!Review

Hello again, MFC! It's been a while since my last review. Much longer than anticipated, no thanks to delays, haha... But! At long last, a much-anticipated figure is finally home!

Let's get right to it!

Today we'll be looking at
1/8 Scale Mikazuki Munechika (Awakened Ver.) by Orange Rouge!
ITEM #464625

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069038.jpeg
"This is getting intense... Time to go all-out, I suppose."
I've been eagerly looking forward to this figure ever since it was announced at summer Wonfes in 2016. Around that time, preorders had opened for the regular version, ITEM #287697, which at the time I decided to pass on - the promotional pictures were disappointing, and the pose struck me as boring. (full disclosure, I now own that one too and I love it lmao). GSC/Orange Rouge had so far been using only the default poses for their Touken Ranbu scales, and I dreamed of a TR scale that could compete with the lively, fluid poses of female figures on the market - or even male figures from other companies. Awakened Mikazuki, based on the character's special attack sprite from the game, would provide an opportunity to show off the dynamism and grace that swordboys were made for.

Two years after he was announced, and after nearly six months of delays--Awakened Mikazuki not only delivers, he was well worth the wait.

Let's take a look at him!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2068996.jpeg
Here's how he looks from the side! He takes up quite a bit of horizontal space, which surprised me (and proved to be a bit of a pain later, when I was deciding where to put him...).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2068997.jpeg
From the back, you can see details that weren't visible in the original illustration! The tassels on the back of his neck are particularly striking.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2068998.jpeg
It can be difficult to get a good angle on this figure due to the motion of the clothing, but I'm always struck by his beauty when I find another good angle to shoot from!! The contours of his back and the twirl of his clothes are breathtaking in person.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2068999.jpeg
From this angle, you can see the open part of his hakama, along with the abandoned sleeve in greater detail. And, of course, some of the damage on his torso...!!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069000.jpeg

Square on with his chest provides a pretty good view of... his damaged armor! /shot. It's nice to see a Touken Ranbu figure showing a little skin! The chaos of his movement is reflected in the tassels here, and I can almost hear the armor clinking.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069001.jpeg
Throughout the figure you can see signs of the intense battle - His clothes are dirty and torn, his armor chipped. Orange Rouge's attention to detail is on point as usual, though part of me wishes they'd left off the dirt from the original illustration. :'D

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069029.jpeg
From this angle, you can see how close the sword is to his sleeve--it's actually making contact near the end. Mikazuki came with his sword packed separately in the box, and included instructions for how to put him together. It was really nerve-wracking to get the sword in place; I didnt want to break it or scuff the paint.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069030.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069031.jpeg

A few more shots from higher angles! You can really get a sense of motion when looking from above, as well as how much space he takes up horizontally. I especially like the twist of the sleeve in the second shot.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069032.jpeg

From below, though... he has quite a fearsome presence! I wouldn't want to be the enemy caught in his gaze...!! (or maybe i would, heheh)

As I turned the figure around to get these shots, I noticed a ton of details to highlight in my review! Let's take a closer look:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069002.jpeg
First, the ties on his gauntlets! I'd hardly noticed them in the art or on the first Mikazuki, but here their detailed sculpt stands out!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069003.jpeg
And next... his expression!! Possibly the most important part of any figure. It can be hard to get a good angle on it, and the mouth can look awkward depending on how you look at it. But I think they did a good job with it. I was also very impressed by the sculpting on his hair.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069004.jpeg
I noticed that his shoulder has a gash in it, and a wound is painted on the now-visible skin! It's a small detail, but i thought it was neat.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069005.jpeg
In this shot, I wanted to get a closer look at the tassels on the back of his neck. These aren't visible in the original art, nor are they visible in the regular version of the figure. It's a treat to be able to see this kind of detail!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069006.jpeg
The way his clothes hang just so against his back....!!! Ahh, I could stare at him forever. It was also neat to see the little snaps on his shoulder armor.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069007.jpeg
Wanted to make sure I showed off the important things, eheheh...!! His torso may not be as detailed as some of the other figures in my collection, but it matches the original artist's style more closely.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069008.jpeg
Here you can see more details of his damaged armor and flying tassels. I was particularly impressed by this section in the regular version, and I am even more so for the Awakened version. Sculpting each one of those tassels individually must have been a herculean task...!!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069009.jpeg
I also noticed that they included the ties on the accents' reverse side--as with the regular version, I appreciate that these figures include the kinds of details you would see on an actual outfit.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069010.jpeg
A look at his soiled hakama... The gold paint of the accents contrasts the airbrushed dirt. Again I find myself wishing they'd skipped the dirt... but Orange Rouge's commitment to recreating the original illustration is admirable.

The base is simple and elegant; similar to the regular version's, but with pegs that provide more support for Mikazuki's feet. There is also one metal rod peg to support his right heel. I had a little bit of trouble getting everything to line up, but once I got him on the base, I had no issues.

One thing I do want to point out is that the base had a kind of oily feel right out of the box. I had to wipe it off with some cloth before starting the shoot.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069011.jpeg
In my review of the regular version, I noticed that Mikazuki's socks have an edge seam, while Kogitsunemaru's have a center seam. In the Awakened version, the missing center seam has been added.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069012.jpeg
I also noticed that on his right foot, the laces of his sandals are off just slightly. It's hard to see in this photo (and it was hard to get a photo of to begin with) but I noticed it when putting him on the base. Considering this foot is usually out of sight, this doesn't bother me.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069014.jpeg
The tiny little loop on the corner of his robes caught my eye - presumably it was for fastening to a button on the other side. I also noticed, for the first time, that Mikazuki's breastplate is entirely absent from this figure; it must have fallen off in the heat of battle.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069016.jpeg
The ties on his armor are really impressive. More hidden details that you would never see otherwise!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069021.jpeg
Quickly before I forget - the sword is really cool, and this picture unfortunately doesn't do it justice. His scabbard also has the same impressive level of detail as the regular version.

And now, a few more shots just for fun...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069013.jpeg

I wanted to see if I could get an angle capturing his body line... you can kind of see the arch of his back here. Ahh, he looks so good...!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069017.jpeg
As I work with the figure, I've noticed that the intensity of his expression is most clear when his mouth is obscured... Truth be told, PICTURE #1783978 is what convinced me to bite the bullet and preorder him. While I've so far been unable to recreate that photo exactly, I've been having fun trying.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069025.jpeg
Yet another shot like the above, heheh... Honestly, I could look into those beautiful eyes all day!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069024.jpeg
Here he is next to ITEM #287697 ! They're about the same height, but the Awakened ver's pose makes him just a wee bit shorter. they look absolutely stunning together; I'm so glad I ended up owning both of them ;u;. I definitely don't regret preordering the Awakened version, as I feel that he was worth the steep price tag. I'm also happy that I was able to find regular Mikazuki at a price that worked better for me.

Waaaaay back when I reviewed Nendoroid Mikazuki (three years ago, almost!) I talked about how he was my gateway into Touken Ranbu. Seeing that Nendoroid was what made me want to check out the series, and though I've since come to love many more swordboys, Mikazuki will always be my favorite. When I first bought the Nendoroid, who could have guessed that I'd eventually own three figures of him? Normally I'm not one to buy multiple figures of the same character, but... Mikazuki is just so beautiful, how could I not?

I wish I could compare the scale to the Nendoroid Co-de with the same pose (ITEM #451829), just for fun, but... unfortunately I don't have one ;u; I am always on the lookout for one, though! One day maybe I'll have every Mikazuki...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069026.jpeg
I couldn't help standing him next to ITEM #287698, my other swordboy love. The two of them have a very commanding presence together! I hope Orange Rouge keeps making Awakened versions of the boys, because Awakened Kogitsunemaru would make an incredible figure. And also so my awakened Mikazuki can have a boyfriend of his own

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069027.jpeg
I wanted to take a higher angle picture just to show off the motion in Mikazuki's clothes and Kogits' hair. They look so good together...!!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069028.jpeg
Set them up like this, and it looks like Mikazuki is defending his boyfriend from harm! He looks as though he's daring his opponent to take a step forward!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069033.jpeg
I borrowed my boyfriend's ITEM #27637 to recreate a fight scene! Though her sword is much larger than his, haha...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069034.jpeg
Even if they're not from the same series, it's fun to shoot with figures that have similar outfits/backgrounds!

Anyway, I think that just about does it for this review! Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this figure. It was disappointing to have to wait even longer for him to come home (he was originally supposed to be out in April), but if the delays contributed to this figure coming out as perfectly as possible, then it was well worth the wait.

And now, on to the scores!

Sculpt: If I gave this figure any less than a 10 for sculpting it would be an absolute crime. Orange Rouge (and GSC as a whole) are already known for their attention to detail, and Mikazuki is a stunning example. Every nick and tear in the original illustration has been reproduced faithfully in 3-D, and the movement in his clothes is absolutely breathtaking in person.
Paint: I'd give the paint a 9. "Magu, why a 9, when you gave the original version a 10?" Honestly, it's the dirt patches. I know, I know, it's faithful to the illustration to a T--but the dirt bothered me in the promo pics and it bothers me on the real thing. Otherwise I have no complaints; all the paint lines are clean, and details are given appropriate attention.
Pose: Pose also gets a 10. It's accurate to the illustration, perfectly capturing Mikazuki's power and grace in equal measure. (And, might I add, it's appropriately titillating)
Base: I gave the regular version's base a 7, and I think I'm going to repeat that score here. It's simple and elegant, but not particularly interesting. I do wonder about that oily feel it had coming out of the box, though...
Enjoyment: A solid 10, if not even higher. Honestly, I'm so glad I decided to preorder him, price be damned. I don't know if I could properly capture in photos just how stunning he is in person. It's figures like Awakened Mikazuki that blur the line between commercial product and work of art, and he's one I definitely would not mind showing off to family and friends. If you were on the fence about getting Awakened Mikazuki, I say he's absolutely worth it.

Here's where I'm keeping him--for now, anyway...
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069036.jpeg
I had to do a bit of tetris to figure out where to put him, as he takes up much more horizontal space than I'd anticipated, and the space I'd made for regular Mikazuki ended up not working...

I did buy my first detolf recently, though, and I've been slowly migrating figures over there! At the moment I don't want to relegate either of my Mikazukis to the detolf, but I fear I may have to in due time.... In the future I may look at getting a traditional Japanese doll display case (single-occupant) to house him elsewhere in my room. Maybe I'll have moved to a larger place before I have to figure it out, lmao.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2018/09/30/2069035.jpeg
Not showing off my entire desk this time because the other side is currently a disaster area, lmao...

Anyway, if you made it this far--thank you so much for reading!

While I don't foresee myself adding any more Touken Ranbu scales to my collection (unless they decide to bless us with Awakened Kogitsunemaru), I'll definitely be keeping my eye on figures from the series! I'm particularly excited about ITEM #740107, as I'd been clamoring for him for a while. (My Suwabe bias must be fed!!) I can't wait to see how he comes out!

My next review will likely be in November, when my next Amiami order of ITEM #604403 and ITEM #651234 comes in! (Fingers crossed for no delays!). It's been a while since I last had two nendoroids coming at once... I'm excited! Once all my September stuff comes in I'll likely make a loot post too, heheh...

Anyway, that just about does it for this long-winded review. See you next time!

He's really gorgeous! I feel like I should get him even if I haven't watched the series yet. All those details are amazing.

Mikazuki wasn't what got me into Touken Ranbu (that was Yasusada) but I remember a long time ago an acquaintance of mine was talking about trying to get him in the game and how he's such an old man, haha. It was quite a surprise to see him in Hanamaru and when I found out why people call him Jiji lmao.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!! ;u;

I was also pleasantly surprised to see my favorite jiji in Hanamaru! and that he got screentime with kogits.... they Know....

Great review!

I have the original ver so I couldn't bring myself to buy the awakened one so I really appreciate your detailed description. Awakened Jiji is gorgeous <3

Thanks for the review! I'm waiting for my jiji to come in the mail, and he looks fantastic!

One day I hope they make my favourite toudan (I don't really think he's popular enough for it ;__;), but Mikazuki got me into the series as well and came to my honmaru early so I always have a special place for him. ^^

So many of my faves have yet to get the OR figure treatment in the first place but I'd totally support more awakened sword boys! And I absolutely agree with you on Kogi! He'd be my first choice for another awakened ver. too <3

Thank you! I hope you'll be able to add him (and your other faves!) to your collection too! ^^

Thank you! I'm always glad to introduce another innocent soul to swordboy hell >:D

You're welcome! I hope you'll be able to find him somewhere!! (though I fear for what the aftermarket will do to his price...)

Thank you very much for the review! I am of those which were scared by its price tag, and now I feel a fool. Your pictures showed off pretty much every detail possible and DAMN he's good. You did a good job!
I also hope for Kogi's Awakened figure... That's one of my favourite artworks in-game!

Thank you! And tbh, it's totally fair to be daunted by the price tag!! $170 is no laughing matter for a lot of people (though I think I paid closer to $140 from Amiami, but still). I saved up for him by putting $20 into savings every month after I ordered him, and by the time he would have originally come out, I'd saved up the $140. While I think he's worth the money, I also hope that one day everyone who wants to will be able to enjoy him ;u;

And yes, please OR.... bless us with awakened kogitsunemaru...
