! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

This is a review of a figure in an outfit that can be considered NSFW by some as it's tight-fitting!

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of the super cute Shoujo Ripple ENTRY #10640 from PC Shoujo ENTRY #10641 ! This figure ITEM #5600 is made by Kotobukiya ENCYCLOPEDIA #7621 .

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

There actually is...not much background for this one as far as my research can bring me! Shoujo Ripple is an character design from the famous artist POP ENTRY #8335 , meant as an anthropomorphism for the Ripple PC, an desktop released in 2009 (same year as this figure). Considering the manufacturer Kotobukiya named the line PC Shoujo, there maybe was an idea to make a whole line of anthropomorphism PC's. Currently only this design and this figure exist. Maybe the line wasn't as succesfull as they hoped it to be? A few years after this figure was made, they made new artworks for this character design and released some character CD's with songs of her. I personally never managed to find any of these for sale and can only find older announcements for them.

The reason why and how I got her

I remember browing Yahoo! auctions because I had some spending money, when I stumbled across this one for cheap. I don't know the exact price I paid for her, but it was somewhere around 3K, which is less than half of her release price. This figure had been on my wishlist for a long time and this was the chepeast I've seen her yet, so I went for it! If you want to see the full loot I got back then, you can check out this blog: BLOG #40486 .

Original art

Well, the original computer she is modelled after looks like this:

The PC came in multiple colors, but none of them in a similar palette to this figure. I have a hard time finding any similarities, maybe they chose for Ripple as a name for her as it was a popular buzz word with this computer getting close to release?

As far as I know, the image POP made of which this figure is based on, is only to be found on the box, which explains the lower quality image.

The figure is posed a lot more laying down in the original artwork compared to the more upright sitting position of the figure.

The box is a bit simple looking, which might be explained by it's really limited and exclusive release type instead of it being for general sale. However, her release price was quite a normal price for scaled figures back in the day, so I expected a bit better quality packaging to be honest.

The figure is sealed off with some round tape. As mine was bought secondhand, this seal was already broken.

Ripple comes in an interesting type of blister that is like a clamshell at the botton and the regular 'press down buttons' at the top. Both her blister and box are quite compact for the size of the figure.

The bottom of the blister has the wire that Ripple holds and has her 'tail'. I found it interesting that this part was still sealed with mine, seems like the previous owner displayed her without it.

You probably already noticed a small piece of folded paper I put under Ripple's behind, that is because my copy of this figure won't sit by herself! No matter if it's with or without base, she loses balance and topples over backwards (this was not mentioned in the store listing description, so I think they did not 'test' this figure sitting down). I guess this happened because of the figure being for a long time on display, maybe also with not being on a flat surface, at it's previous owner.

Now, for this figure in her most cast-off state. I personally like how there is so much attention drawn now to the top part of her pants with the shiny paint that makes it look spandex-like. The figure however, does feel a bit 'off' to me without the skirt (it makes her midriff look even more thin than she already is) and the outstretched hand that is now holding nothing.

Seeing Shoujo Ripple without her headset just somewhat feels 'off', it might be because she looks a bit simple/empty without it.

Ripple's 'tail' is an actual electrical wire! It surprised me, but on the other hand makes sense. It's supposed to look like an electrical wire and if they would have to especially sculpt something like this, it would have been a lot more expensive and would addd an extra fragile part to this figure.

I couldn't directly fit the wire in the figure where I was supposed to, so I had to carefully shave down the ends of the wire before it fit.

Ripple's adorable expression and huge headpiece really get your attention when you get your first look at her! Her closed eye actually has a bit of a sculpt indicating her upper and lower eyelid, which is nice!

She has a cute, small blush across her cheeks and the small star is a nice add-on! The sculpt of her bangs is okay for her age and the hair shows a bit of shading.

The headpiece is cool looking, although maybe a bit simple for todays' figure standards. With all those transparant pieces, I think this figure would look really cool if you would add lights to her!

Also from the back, the hair is a bit simple, but looks quite good. I like how you can see here how her bunny ears are attached to the headpiece.

The bunny ears are very cute looking and have a fade from darker green to a lighter green, with as a returning symbol the same yellow star as the one on her cheek.

Her crop top has an interesting design with a big hoodie at the back. There is also quite some shading to be found here, similar to the shading in her bunny ears.

The small lines are painted quite well for a figure this age, I especially like to point out the 'stitches' in her clothes at both sides.

The ruffled 'sleeves' and the bottom of her top are a nice effect and the lightblue lines on there are pretty decent looking.

The hoods' look is very characteristic for this character designer as he likes to blow up the proportions here and there for a lot of his clothes, mainly seen in hats/caps/hoods, gloves and shoes.

Ripple's right hand is mostly blocked from view when you display her with her skirt on. The gloves itself look a bit clunky, and the top parts remind me of computer cables.

She also wears a watch on her right hand, which mixes well with the rest of the figure's color palette.

The end of the wire has a PVC sculpted piece attached that reminds of an aux non-fader cord, although I can't 100% say for sure it is one. When they 'rebooted' this character later and made new artwork for her, it was revealed that she is a singer, so maybe that part was already in her character design during the original design stage?

In cast-off state, we can see the pants Ripple wears the best. It a shiny spandex-type of materal and has quite some details with the lines showing without making it really perverted. The look of the attachment part of her tail is an interesting choice. I'm not really sure wheter to like or dislike it, but I have the feeling that it's placement might have to do with the balancing problems my copy of Ripple has...

That latex-shine is really good! And because of the tail being a normal electrical wire, it gives you quite some freedom in how you want to pose it!

Her boots also have a very interesting design with the returning star symbol and what seems like to be volume and bass/tremble buttons at the bottom. There are some slight paint errors on my copy, but nothing too worrisome.

The bottom of her boots have the characteristic POP look, multiple details to be seen here and quite clunky shaped, very cute!

At one point during my photographing I laid the figure down and I actually quite liked the look! Considering my Ripple can't sit well by herself on her base, maybe I will experiment in the future with a base in which she can lay down or maybe hang her up with some invisible wire in my display case.

The Points

Positive
- Cute and interesting character design as we're used to from this artist!
- Paint and sculpt is nicely done for her age.

Neutral
- Box design is a bit disappointing.
- Absolutely not a bad figure, but has not aged that well compared to other figures released around the same time as to be called an outstanding piece.

Negative
- Could be specific to my copy and/or could be specific due to the age and how the figure was displayed: My copy of this figure won't sit down by herself.

The Scores

Sculpting 7/10
She's sculpted very nicely, but has not survived the ravages of time.

Painting 8/10
For her painting I think time has been a bit more kind to her. There is quite a bit of shading and most smaller details are painted quite well.

Posing 7/10
I think her posing is adorable, but the small posing on an already small figure, make her a bit harder to display. Furthermore, I'll have to deduct some score for my specific copy of this figure not being able to sit by herself.

Base 5/10
I honestly forgot to take a seperate picture of the base for this review and I had not thought about the base until I reached this point while typing the review. The base is a big disc in a basic color with no pegs. I recommend to rather display the figure with it than without it, but that's all I can say.

Packaging 7/10
It's very light and compact, which is a plus, but the dull colors really make this look like an really old design figure, while I own and have owned many figures with full color boxes of the same age and older. Maybe her boring box design has something to do with her release, but it's still a bit disappointing.

Enjoyment 7/10
I really like the design and I think the figure is good enough for what I paid for her, but my enjoyment is a bit lower than I normally would score an just-unboxed figure from a character designer I love, as the fact that she can't fit by herself really dulls the otherwise happy mood.

Conclusion

She's a cute figure, but I would really only recommend her if you're a fan and/or collector of her character designer or if you have a display/collection with anthropomorphism PC-like figures, such as the earlier very popular OS-tan ENTRY #9542 designs.

Availability

Shortly after release Ripple went for high prices because of her exclusivety, but probably after people realized her quality was a bit lower than the average Kotobukiya product back then, her price fell down again. Nowadays she regularly pops up for sale on second hand websites for prices of 3,5-4,5K yen, which really makes me wonder how much were produced if she was supposed to be so exclusive...

Comparison with VICTORVIPER 's review BLOG #17327 of the same figure

While I was still writing this review, I found out that VICTORVIPER uploaded a review of this figure as well. On purpose I did not read it until I finished writing this review myself, so I could compare it later.

The biggest difference between our copies is that Victor does not seem to have as big of an issue with keeping her in her seated position. He does mention the figure easily tips over. Furthermore his copy also had less of an issue to keep the cable/tail placed. There are some things the other way around too. I personally did not have any issues at all with keeping her headset in place and both of the ears on my headset are firmly stuck.

Comparing our scores, we gave her very similar scores, where the biggest differences are that either one of us gave her 1 point more or less on a specific subject than the other. The only big difference is our enjoyment, as mine was 1,5 point less because of my frustration with having her seated.

I also found it interesting that Ripple seems to be a lot more rare on the general figure buying sites. Victor seems to browse more on the international Japanese sites and USA stores, while I mostly stick to the more niche Japanese sites that need a proxy and European stores.

Overall, we pointed out a lot of similar things with this figure and we both seem to have quite some enjoyment from her. It is very interesting how both of us have widly different defects with this figure (Victor's headpiece being his worst and my balancing being my worst), which I guess can also be pointed at the fact that 'older' figures were really of a different quality and different way of quality control back in the days.

And to finish it!

I'm not done placing everything yet, but I'm making a small display shelf of 'older' designed figures from POP:

I think Ripple fits very well with these two, but I'm still thinking about give her a laying or floating pose later on!

damedanbo (3 måneder siden) #58273990Just reread this review, having come from your latest blog. Your reviews are really nice! You never fail to make me want a figure, haha. The cord tail is a really interesting gimmick on her. Thanks for sharing, hope to see more from you soon!

Hehe, now this one also comes very close in design to Little Red from the other blog. :) Ripple is not that expensive if you find her for sale, so I would say: go for it! Thanks for liking the reviews so much! Right now I am on an on average 2-a-week posting spree, which I think I can keep doing for 1 or 2 more months at least before real life kicks in again, haha! So yes, you can expect quite some more reviews in the upcoming time. :) Maybe you'll like the Hikari review I posed yesterday as well: BLOG #42671

solluxcaptor (4 måneder siden) #55965037Wow, this design, I love her!! I can't believe I've never seen this before, I want to get one and put her together with my ME-Tan~ I love the spandex look and your review is amazing and detailed as always

Yes! She will go very well with most of those OS-tans! Even quality-wise she will match with most, so she won't look out of place. :) It would have been nice if Koto had continued this set though~ The spandex is indeed great, it's super neat looking without making her oversexualized.

Thanks for liking the review! :D Glad to see you (shortly) back on MFC. :) If you end up getting this figure, I hope you will also get a good price!

victorviper (4 måneder siden) #55559036It's interesting that we had some similar observations about this figure, yet the two copies of the figure showed some very different quirks.
It was interesting to learn that there was in fact an actual PC with the name Ripple. My two minutes of Googling failed to turn up much, however, about this machine and I never knew such a thing existed. How did you learn about the existence of these machines?
Based on the "number" BLOG #17327 of my review, I must have started writing that over 4 years ago! A few days ago, when hardly any new blogs were appearing, I decided to "go into the vault" and finish up a couple of posts that were 95% written and that I'd just never gotten around to finishing up. It's funny that you decided to review Ripple right around the same time!
If you ever want to do a "2 player review" of a figure like Wayfinder and Beani did on BLOG #7882, let me know; that might be fun to do.

I guess you got the 'better' Ripple, although the headpiece sounds annoying, yours doesn't need any help to keep sitting in position. :( Anyhow, it's a good figure and we both got her for cheap so I'm still happy with my purchase. :)

I can't find in my search history what I exactly looked for, but I found older tech websites talking about 'new release mini desktop PC's', websites/pages similar to: www.geeky-gadge... . As for her Twitter and 'reboot' character design, I found out by researching the Japanese spelling of the name. :) Here is her Twitter by the way: twitter.com/rip... The 'newer' artwork is also very cute! I would like to find at least one of her CD's one day as it probably has a lot of never-before-seen artwork. :)

And wow! I did not realize the blog number got 'reserved' for you like that! And yeah it's really a coincidence, I am backlogged with reading reviews and just randomly saw your Ripple review on the homepage and thought 'huh...seems like Victor beat me to it', as we talked about reviewing her before, haha!

Do you by the way have any idea why some days seem to be slower days on MFC? I think it's mainly Tuesdays and I have no clue if there is some kind of connection with anything else happening on the internet or figure-collecting-wise?

And oh! :O That definitely sounds fun! It's been a long time since I saw such a review so I never thought of it! I checked your collection for figures we both have, but both didn't write a review for and:
1) I got ITEM #323991 a couple of days ago as a lucky find at a convention, so I could unbox/photograph her. :)
2) ITEM #99565 is on my pile of 'should unbox/review' so I could move her to the front of my photography/review queue. ;)
3) I still would like to write a review of ITEM #152 , but she is tucked away in storage right now, so probably not the best choice.

I guess the best way to do such a thing is both making our own pictures and then messaging eachother to write up a review?

Anyway, feel free to move over to PM so we can discuss this further, I'm really excited about the idea and right now I have more free time than I will have in a couple of weeks. ;)

Om denne bloggen

Welcome to my figure-blog!

I mostly write reviews for this blog, since I like to read and write those kind of articles the most! I also think of them as very useful for other collectors and Japan enthusiasts!

Next to that, I also write tutorials for GK's, loot blogs, cosplay and convention-related articles and guides for hobby-related subjects...just take a look!

I hope you enjoy my articles and feel free to rate and leave comments! :)
