Recently my image hosting decided to call it quits without informing me. This caused all my blogs on MFC to have their pictures gone.

Re-uploading and re-linking all the images is a long task. If you are reading this and are interested in the blog below, please leave a comment and I will give fixing that specific blog priority.

Thank you for checking out my blog!

! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Chris Redfield ENTRY #2158 from the original Biohazard/Resident Evil ENTRY #568 game. This figure ITEM #464598 is from the Nendoroid line ENTRY #23355 and manufactured by Good Smile Company ENTRY #7620 .

I will start off with telling some more about his background.

Background

The game Biohazard (known in most Western countries as Resident Evil) was originally released in 1996 and got a very nice remake in 2002, which was later also released as an HD version in 2015. It's one of the (and claimed by some as 'the') pioneer in the survival horror game-genre. You get locked up in a mansion where zombies and other undead creatures are after you, and you have to fight, dodge and puzzle your way out. The game used pre-rendered environment screens and realtime rendered characters with each release looking amazing for it's release date. If you have never tried this game I really recommend it, even if you are not into survival horror, as it's something very unique. When I started playing the franchise myself, it became a quick favorite of mine.

Chris Redfield is one of the protagonists of the first game and the reason we are seeing a figure of him now, was because it was a special Nendoroid for the game it's 20th anniversary. Chris is a very respectable character, he started his career young in the U.S. Air Force and after his retirement there, he got scouted into the S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) Alpha Team, a special law enforcement organization. This is also the point in which we see Chris in the first game and this figure, he is on a mission with coworkers to investigate some strange killings in the area, when he gets trapped into the mansion you have to explore (and survive!) in the game.

The reason why and how I got him

I'm a big Resident Evil fan, but the franchise it's merchandise is quite riddled with issues. Most merchandise from Japan is crazy expensive and/or exclusive and most merchandise from European and USA manufacturers is of low quality. Because of this, most of my RE collection consists of different releases of the games and quite some pieces of clothing, as those are the best bang for your buck merchandise-wise. When this Nendoroid was announced, I was ecstatic, as it finally meant we would get an sort-of affordable figure from a good manufacturer! So when pre-orders opened for this figure, I ordered him right away.

The look of this figure is after the original design of the first Resident Evil game, above images are screenshots from his upgraded 3D model for the normal and HD remake. You will see that all the small details will be on the figure, including the belt, the knife and all the pockets on the vest. It was very nicely recreated on such as chibi figure!

Chris is one of the newer Nendoroids, which means he is a slightly bit smaller than older releases and comes with the box design with a bigger front window. The dark-green main color of the box fits very well with his background and overall look.

When it comes to these newer design boxes, I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of them. As you can see in the picture from the front of the box, there is quite some distance between the plastic front window and the cardboard part at the top. It's easy to get the box damaged because of this, so you have to be careful with it.

This Chris Nendoroid is from the line of Nendoroids that gets fully produced in Japan, and there is a small logo on the box indicating this.

The box also mentions in a small icon that this figure is for the Resident Evil 20th Anniversary. I got quite some goods sporting this icon now, most of them being clothes. I really like it also being included here!

There are a lot of complaints nowadays about Nendoroids being barebones when it comes to accessories, but luckily Chris comes with quite some parts!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/A6ps_I7yX9-okElzCCDzySAAIzne85G8PrHYQbTeMxNSpP3WVkyrB51w9UKaZ-VRH6sVtEpiN6ODfuH7IkrVObr9lgwE-QL5-tDCSQbn8v4VLJ44KW4c4oh8tGHk_MEyGDcj_L41wEmaJ2FC2gxGvhWNIDkyoBauB1tYhq16lb9Qa6F9zJGYwZKnrNCUMauUGtV5kYJkzXdgB_X4cyIIsvOwJ78l91MupCY5INWttXzrDmtf0YGyk3vBHtm_g2hnZIwaJyAWUHucn_bV_5lx1vHny8O064lN4KUzHpB_9R9dyby_5Fr2Y9Aqjh5AQWJ6zQiV_B6zZSUUOEJgHH72pZcEmsKSgA9gACajyhMcXtiNtQsN9cTWR_seoN1zU-3ezbMBInKzFfkKNRqftUDq0wy7aHGhJ8qQOSSdksHlq8V31vrtlUBm_W0_1muMMNPrEW-5pfUgB7B7Ao_1bQBn25njor1ilrAhc860GyO3rdKnoUQkiwccenBxdkZRAQX92d9t198ZSropc3e4uucXuypUL7Oahm-ryMYYjvhje3eVCpDgxI59FojMQUvtTjRQVj8e1sD7UCNjWdIxE_lHFoQlXDigZxajDkqtk6RV3pngBoKzh-_3w_wABmLjD6GyLf8zcWt1kXvHXhY40Mol9U3U345yqmk=w1288-h966-no?.jpg

He also comes with a parts list and some small instructions on how to assemble the bazooka, switch the faceplates and put the Nendoroid on it's base.

For this review I will put the Nendoroid in a couple of different poses and talk about what there is to see in that pose.

I thought a fun first pose would be to make use of the green herb at first! There is no official holding part for the green herb, but it can easily be placed in Chris his arms. I also positioned his left hand in a way where it seems like he is trying to grab his knife.

Those small legs that can either be bend or straight really add a lot of options to the look of this figure! (Running, kneeling, walking etc.)

The small details on Chris his body are done very well, from the back you can see the S.T.A.R.S. name on his jacket and all the belts and straps are placed correctly.

The S.T.A.R.S. emblem on his sleeve is also a nicely put on decal. You can also see that this is a 'MMS' Nendoroid, Multible Movable System, which means his arms are jointed as well. This comes with it's own up-and downsides. The extra movability gives for a lot more display options, but the way the connection is made in the arm also makes it easy for the peg there to pop out.

I am a bit mixed about how Chris his hair looks on this Nendoroid. The way the sculpt is done, makes it look like very realistic hair, but at the same time also a bit like it's supposed to be curly, which Chris his hair is not.

I really love all the small details on his outfit, from all the small pockets to the knee protectors. It would have been nice if there was a bit of shading on some parts though, although I think that is rarely (or never?) done with Nendoroids, so I wasn't expecting it.

Assembly issues

Before I go on about the next pose of this figure, I really want to make a note about the huge assembly issues this figure has.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/XhYjEJ-cs1FEe-rYuoKfqUFoEFlgTNcFqC14FxufRiSW7tm9s0do1iB7OOssceTllx3WeizIr3YRtdY2-coFh8-xH_AFioPpnhw-9p0pQbiheORq-O3zigjqkXaaGsCVqY-KohuS29JX-7RqTP3Ro6TLyoyfcBrmkEdFTdtXvYPYjhkZNFXBSq3HNdCk-E0q7mFbW6m1bxipzOM4m2axLHNCZYBlc4qEiPUJANRB7InU6uIO5Q37LPY2KDn-sLJEBYGm3TIfOW6QcPCeYD-qFycs_myQOYWNAZxleVIUDrtPMOafcCmJCha_ZranJFsbWmTqarGSUimWyIszHb9dYYLZgXC9S1MtC0-pntqsHFvtWyQl2rZveX3gSTDakSQ5RecrdbLzX5YJ2-Sx5qj-RABqpZ_3EwsXjuPZtsu4yO94nf1Bk5NyZSQUi4Z726agMOzUZl6rKX2XYPm0yCzK2pr-Fc-0_F0-eEchtEiOnkgLxjxLQrcoTwN0cMmhast0Vl8i4w9RseuTWOPFsVS-ry31kT-1uJYg2ENyFd73WEYOmvJeS6cwXbPBIpIKzZg5CVh_8TlPscd07OzB7MN04NXZk8aTHSpDnI_o_pIThtMS_JIwJNxEKXb-R-yUOI4hs7LA1uBsBBtB3Y1BWNi4_wmQJ5EwbFQ=w1288-h966-no?.jpg

My camera couldn't catch such minimal detail, so I'm sorry the picture is a bit blurry. Here you can see one of his hands and the lower half of his arm. That tiny peg sticking out from under the arm, needs to be put into that tiny hand and it's unbelievable how hard this is! The pieces are so small, that it's hard to give any strength during pushing.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/EQgo0LslTjltfUGA55DOZtCP7r6o3RwRz2OzRiIvzGZYcg-n8Kko2Kzv8s6GSBkTTjeLlrt9bsDdy-qiIJVOSAGr3drAXf6-6HRtDVGPS1FU9gdAXE4z4AkCOvt6GATxn6dUzNYvCVSOGJ2JLMQsKx_L9molr0VbBiV0DPDfTZL0ZKoSFbDJ3aYjCus9jfSqCcivvmzvs13yR9gpAdfdnXvD0RUP1DRSW7Hf5RbKXIagTxYHoQ62VWZa_Hpz1xjDn--E2evq8hhiSX3QEE6vmPrcQflyPfAU8UEyiw5kMZ-sGVeTLyokrRP-hz1Q5V2K06Wguzq44g5KoW8LR5f-W6vGW7bfJq-tHFFBDqlY-9O51CkQSTNgrl4EAoAZy4Ox6sTayRcnSbhXvcdzeLj4UuVl9IQvNxeeVzJP53ASt5NWE8DYk2ro164CBO9qKR3bsg8D254Vxu7VDwPo_sFq_dYB4FUPj7q_l8MLuuUmPQkftTP577uohq5eVozwWc_Vfbwx9IGwvqXhZAJnIq3jwJKreIax1SyhnjgP1kZnDey5jJGwdDboEydH5hmvkc5vtm38KLMgyJD6-0v-F4x9MNIt66CudCbHlSJjkgfZVa9u8hta5kYnwfqkoJUfg4ttsONzLP7q-J9BPxMvMiXDpr33UmNqhhI=w1288-h966-no?.jpg

I mostly rested the pieces on one handpalm, while pushing the other piece in there and it got me so much small bruises. After I was done with assembling this figure and making the pictures for the review, my handpalm hurt for the rest of the day. I couldn't find any good alternatives for assembling him, as holding it with tweezers didn't give me enough strength and pushing the parts on objects like tables, chairs etc. didn't give me enough grip to get them together.

Overall, assembly was horrible for this figure, so in the next pictures you will notice that especially the hand pieces are not pushed in fully, but I just sort-of gave up after a while, I was getting too frustrated.

Now, I tried to recreate the way he holds his knife in the game with this Nendoroid, but it was a lot harder than it looked! I also removed the small knife holder from his chest pocket, but it leaves you with a hole in the chest unfortunately.

The knife itself is very nicely detailed and has a good shine to it!

I tried to make a pose to let it look like Chris was carefully approaching an enemy. The hand can not fully be placed upwards, so it looks a bit weird in the final assembly.

I really wanted to recreate this look from the promotional images, but I had a bit of a hard time letting him hold the bazooka well. Luckily the bazooka is very square in shape and can stand pretty wel by itself.

Let's not forget to take a peek at the exclusive base! The decal was applied nicely and the image is quite big on there. I think it's really nice to display Chris on there. It only comes with one big downside: There is only one peg. This downside will be very visible when we get to the next pose...

Chris launching the bazooka is definitely the coolest pose on this figure! His closed eye makes it look like he is carefully trying to aim, while his gritted teeth show that there is quite some knockback with this huge weapon.

Now as for my earlier mentioned issue about this base, the bazooka is quite heavy and comes with an extra peg to keep it up. There is no place to put this peg into the base. It can still balance on the base quite well and help with the weight of this piece, but it's not an ideal solution.

From the side, his gritted teeth and closed eye look even more powerful!

The Points

Positive
- A lot of different poses that can be made.
- Lots of accessories
- A good quality and affordable piece of Resident Evil merchandise

Neutral
- His hair looks a bit strange

Negative
- Posing this little guy is horrible

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
The sculpting is really good for such a little figure and all small details that are there in the original design can be seen here. The only slightly bothersome thing is how they rendered his hair.

Painting 9/10
Almost flawless, but I don't know if it's too much to ask (as Nendoroids are getting more expensive every year), but a little bit of shading, especially around the pockets of his jacket, would have really improved the figure.

Posability 6/10
Posing this figure is really a nightmare. The hands and arms are too small to be assembled well. With this Nendoroid you really want to pick one pose and keep him in there forever. The reason why the score is still a bit 'high' is because the figure comes with a lot of possibilities for different poses, which are sure to please a lot of people!

Base 7/10
The standard Nendoroid base holds the figure and his bazooka well. The special 20th anniversary base is very good looking, but unfortunately only comes with one peg, which means you either have to risk displaying the bazooka on it, or that you can't use the bazooka if you use the special base.

Packaging 7/10
I'm not a huge fan of the new Nendoroid packaging style (even though my first impression with other figures was good earlier). The boxes have to be handled more carefully to assure no damages will come to it. The placement of the parts in the box is good, though.

Enjoyment 8/10
I'm still quite happy with my purchase. It's very unique that we get an affordable Resident Evil item from Japan and I'm very nostalgic to the first Resident Evil. Still, I had to deduct some points for the horrible posability of this guy and I am sure I will never change his pose again.

Conclusion

If you are a big fan of Resident Evil, you are probably known with the issues a lot of RE merchandise has. That said, this figure is really a must-get if you like the first game. If you're not into RE, but in general like Nendoroids, this Nendoroid also seems like a good choice to get a 'weapon pack' for your other Nendoroids to use!

Availability

As expected with this Nendoroid because of being from Resident Evil, his price really shot up in the aftermarket. Released for a price of ¥4,630 (which is already a bit high for a Nendoroid), he now costs ¥7,5K-¥9,5K on the aftermarket. I'm not really sure if I would recommend him for that amount, as in the end, it's a tiny Nendoroid figure. On the other hand, what choices do you have...I mean, the already expensive Kotobukiya figures from a while back (retail price 15K yen, while normally Koto stays with even more recent releases around 10K), are now going for even crazier amounts and most of the more affordable figures are junk quality... *sigh* It can be really annoying being a Resident Evil fan and wanting to collect, so I guess this Nendoroid is still one of the better merchandise-deals even with it's high aftermarket price, than most other RE-items on the market right now.

And to finish it!

My Resident Evil shelf is in-progress, but I have this little guy already on display!

FixedCamera1 år siden#58928555Surprisingly I think Rebecca is actually well liked in japan so maybe one day~

I think Rebecca is mainly liked for her role in the first RE and not RE0? Although more recently she also had a role in the CGI movie and in that bizarre stage play LOL. But yeah, even without a Billy (I sometimes feel like one of the few people liking that character :') ), I'm sure Rebecca would be an adorable Nendoroid. :)

Maakie1 år siden#58928481The Resident Evil/Biohazard license in Japan is just one big mess. :( Would love a Jill Nendoroid as well, although my favorite mains are Billy and Rebecca. :) But considering they are even 'niche' within the RE fandom that will stay a dream, haha!

Surprisingly I think Rebecca is actually well liked in japan so maybe one day~

StardustCrusader1 år siden#56456538I'm guessing the strict handling of the merchandise is the result of censorship in Japan. Some game series never reach peak popularity because of this reason. Take Mortal Kombat for example, I read they won't even release the next one in Japan because of the excessive violence ( which is too bad, I'm sure Japanese companies could make some badass figures of the characters, mainly the ninjas :3 )
This probably explains the lack of good Resident Evil merchandise. There are a few nice figures out there, but they're so expensive >.< The rest of the merchandise as you say is a hit or miss. The only RE merchandise I own (besides this Chris) is a Leon POP! figure ( and several games, but those aren't considered merch)
I was really hoping for a Leon nendo announcement this winter Wonfes (considering the hype of the RE2 remake) but it wasn't so...Next ray of hope is as you say, the 25th Anniversary *fingers crossed*
One thing's for sure, I won't change Chris' pose until a Leon nendo is announced XD

Censorship, huh? I actually never thought about it like that. I also thought most RE's got released there without censorship, just with a heavy 18+ rating? But maybe you know more about that than me? :) My guess about license complications would be that the rules for the merchandise being high quality are way stricter in Japan than the USA and/or that Capcom Japan just asks a way higher revenue share from merchandise than Capcom EU/USA. Anyway, I'm glad that at least in EU/USA quite some stuff has been coming out, but it's like sorting through so many awkward/low quality releases to find something decent... Recently I saw this at a convention:

http://www.abystyle.com/5349-thickbox_default/resident-evil-messenger-bag-umbrella-corp-vinyl-small-size.jpg

At first I thought it was some random bootleg, but it's officially licensed...wtf. IRL it looked even worse with the Umbrella logo looking like some kind of low quality sticker. Take it outdoors or get it wet a few times and you'll just have a black bag? LOL. I also recently ordered ITEM #823534 , because as far as I know, it's the only plushie of an Licker out there. I'm not sure how of questionable quality he will be... :S Except for the teeth, the prototype from that picture seems OK, but we're talking about a Western manufacturer with a very small portfolio here...

Specifically about Mortal Kombat (I love that franchise too! :3 ), there are luckily a lot of very high quality statues already out there, but most of them are way out of my budget and available display space. ^^'' Like, lots of them being 1/4 and 1/3 and being huge polystone beasts. :') I'm certainly in for something more affordable, like having a big share of the cast as prize figures? I have no clue about Mortal Kombat's general popularity in Japan, you?

My RE collection mostly exists of all different kinds of releases of the games, I own quite a lot of them 2 or 3 times. :') You got to collect something, right? I also own a RE pop: ITEM #518248 and actually photographed him a while ago with the idea of doing a review in a while. :)

I was pleasantly surprised about the RE2 remake hype also locally, especially because people weren't going as wild for 0 and 1's remake, but I guess a lot more people are nostalgic to 2? Anyhow I prefer 3 over 2, so I reaalllyy hope they continued right away with remaking 3 as the engine and a lot of the environments are ready, alright? :3

I wouldn't be surprised if the 25th Anniversary brings us something Leon-related, I'm not sure if it will be a Nendoroid, but just..something Leon LOL. What's your opinion about this Leon ITEM #600565 ?

Maakie1 år siden#55912172To both: Thanks for the positive replies on the review! :) I want to be positive, but on the other hand, I also want to be realistic: I think we as RE-fans got very lucky with this 20th Anniversary collaboration spawning this figure, as Capcom seems really really strict with the RE license in Japan. But for some reason they hand it our like free candy in Europe and the USA, resulting in a lot of shoddy quality action figures, plushies and random things of questionable quality (for example, the mug I also show in one of the bottom pictures of the blog already had damage on the print when I received it new...). Anyhow, I guess it has to do something with Capcom EU and/or USA headquarters reacting differently?
For now I think we should hope on something special also coming on for the series it's 25th Anniversary! Maybe finally a matching Jill? Or a Leon if they want to get the protagonist of the next game in the line. :)
I do have to admit that I'm not the best Nendoroid-poser either, but it was really insane with this figure! I can't find one right now, but I also remember in the past seeing reviews of (slightly) angry users about any MMS Nendo as arms easily get detached with them.
I really like the first pose and if it wasn't for the huge and badass looking bazooka, I probably would have displayed him like that. Maybe also holding his gun in one hand, because the gun is nicely detailed too!

Thanks for liking the review! :) And ooh, if you're new to Resident Evil, I really hope you tried (or want to try) 0, it's my favorite in the franchise. Billy and Rebecca are my favorite main characters and the environments of 0 are amazing!

Raze1 år siden#56095722Great review! I don't really follow RE merch releases so I just found out a few weeks ago there was Chris. I was surprised a Japan company finally released a RE figure. Whenever I've browsed around it always seemed like some non-Japan company produced the figures. When I do think of RE figures I think of those Hot Toys ones. They look really good but they're also really expensive. Hot dang if HT releases RE2R ones!
Oh, so the mistranslation explains the L banner on the desk in the RE2 remake! I've been playing the remake and wondered why a lonely L was on the desk. I forgot the original game had the misspelled banner. I gotta check it out again for fun. :)

I try to follow RE merch releases, but even for me it can get confusing as there isn't really one big place that lists (almost) all of it releasing, so a lot of times I find out something exists if it shows up in a store whose newsletter I am subscribed to or when something new gets put in the database here. And I'm still sure that I'm missing out on seeing at least 25% of the merchandise releases, because regularly I find out about stuff that got released years ago. @.@

Those Hot Toys are indeed amazing quality! Talking about Japanese manufacturers, Kotobukiya also made these 2 scaled figures based on Leon and Chris from the latest movie: ITEM #600565 + ITEM #600566 , their prices are horrible though...and I still have a bit of mixed feelings about their looks from that movie compared to the games.

Hehe, I really liked that tribute to the 'bad' banner. Nowadays such things rarely happen anymore because everything gets checked by so much localization teams. :) Thanks for liking the review by the way!

Maakie1 år siden#55986816With a lot of Nendoroids GSC has some inside humor with it, so I'm glad this wasn't ignored for this release of Chris. :)
The announcement of this Nendoroid wasn't done very big, even though it was the series it's 20th annivesary. If it wasn't for this database, I doubt I would have found out about him. Barely any local stores have stocked him either. I wouldn't be surprised if the number produced was quite low.
And hehe, I regularly joke that most of my favorite games are 'Japanese games that look like Western ones' (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Evil Within etc.). :) I think it's very cool how they managed to recreate the idea that these are events located in the USA with (mainly) USA characters. Still, some 'mistakes' sneak in though, such as some mistranslations. Maybe the funniest one to point out is that the original Resident Evil 2 had a banner hanging in a room saying 'Wellcome Leon'. They 'fixed' this in the remake by having the banner in correct spelling and a loose 'L' lying on a desk. ;)

Kaleida1 år siden#56013583A very comprehensive and detailed review, well done^^ I'm kinda disappointed by myself that I decided to skip it but I really want a Wesker Nendo asap.

Thanks for liking the review! :) I do recommend getting this little guy on the aftermarket if you're also interested in Chris, because I wouldn't be surprised if the price gets even higher in the upcoming years...

And yeah, a Wesker would be nice as well! :D Although I have a feeling that if we get more RE Nendo's it will be Leon or Jill.
