! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Akazukin (Little Red Riding Hood) ENTRY #34276 from the fairy tale with the same name ENTRY #13491 . This figure ITEM #282 is a collaboration from Alter ENTRY #7619 and Happinet ENTRY #7663 based on artwork from the famous pastel-cute-colored artist POP ENTRY #8335 . Interesting to point out is that the sculptor of this figure Morikawa Hiromitsu ENTRY #8198 has already sculpted a ton of figures based on POP's artworks.

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Little Red Riding Hood is an European folk tale, that got it's written-down fairy tale versions by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. It is about a little girl that goes on a journey to bring her sick grandmother food, but as most people probably know, the road to grandmother (and grandmother herself) are quite dangerous! Famous character designer and artist POP ENTRY #8335 made a series of illustrated children's books telling famous fairytales, called POP Wonderland. Little Red Riding Hood is one of those books. There is also a trading figure set which has figures based on different pages/events in the book, if you are interested in a review of that one, check it out here: BLOG #40292

The reason why and how I got her

This figure had been on my wishlist for a while and was gifted to me by PONNIE in last years' MFC Secret Santa! If you want to see everything I got in the Secret Santa, you can check out that loot blog here: BLOG #42278

The page on which the posing of this figure was based on is, except for the posing itself, very different from how the figure turned out. For the figure, Alter/Happinet decided to go for a calmer color scheme and they also added items to Red's basket that are visible in other drawings in the book (the bottle and a cloth covering the top of the basket).

The box design of this figure is really cute! The shapes of the windows with the red branches around it really give it a fairytail-like feeling. The box also shows her display options with and without hood.

The box is sealed off with some square tape. Specifically for my box, there are quite some scuffs and dirt on there. It was bought secondhand and considering the age of the figure, I expect it to be quite common to find scuffs and damages even if you manage to grab a sealed copy.

The blisters are a bit interesting to look at, as Red is nicely centered in the middle herself and at the bottom there is space for the base and the interchangable hood.

Red comes with an instruction sheet showing how to remove the hood and how to change the headpiece. I like to point out how the instruction sheet is in a nice and sealed plastic bag. This was pretty common with figures 10 years ago, but nowadays you don't see it much anymore and the paper is loose in the box.

Isn't she a cutie? Without the characteristic hood on, she comes off a bit as a old-time country-type girl.

Her eyes and the expression on her face are absolutely adorable. I like how her eyebrows are up so high, giving a bit of an intrugued and cheery look.

Now, let's also throw in the worst part of the face (and probably the whole figure): The way the face looks, doesn't completely translate to full 3D well. From multiple angles you get a 'chipmunk' face like the one displayed here above. However, would they have fixed this chipmunk look, this figure might not have looked so cute when viewed from her good angles.

Her hair goes from a lighter blonde to darker blonde shade. There is a big seamline in the middle of her hair, which is luckily not very visible from up front (and of course completely not visible if she wears her hood).

There are some errors in the PVC and slight mishaps in paint, but overall this looks really decent considering we are talking about a 10+ year old figure.

Both of her hands are a bit clunky and don't have any details like fingernails or nailpolish. Most of POP's character designs are drawn without these details too, so you can't really blame the figure for this.

In most versions of the story, Little Red is on her way to bring wine and cake. With this figure we can see the bottle of wine sticking out of her basket. The bottle has a nice see-through effect and a cork on top.

Through the side of her outfit is one big seamline. It has been sanded a bit and repainted on top of it, but it can still be seen when you look from up close.

The dress in general is quite simple, but done well. There are some really small paint mishaps at the red/orange trim, but considering the amount of detail there, it's easily forgiven. The apron and the grey base part of the dress show quite some shading. The ruffles at the bottom add an extra layer of cuteness!

Underneath that big, poofy dress her short legs are sticking out. Accurate to POP's general style, she wears very square looking shoes. I like the detail of the wrinkle in her sock just before they transition into her shoes. The shading on her shoes also looks really neat and the gold is applied decently.

Red is a very decent girl that wears an old-fashioned style bloomer. To be honest, I actually expected her bloomer to be way longer, now we get a glimpse of her bare leg. There is quite some shading on her legs to be seen.

She also wears two red ribbons with really big tags on her socks. The shading is nice on them, but the sculpt of the bottom part of the ribbons looks a bit too 'heavy'. They almost look like knife-holders when taken out of context!

Little Red comes with a really nice base. It shows lots of foliage and rocks of different sizes. There is a high amount of shading to be seen everywhere.

If I were to point out one small nitpick with this base, it would be that the foliage and rocks rather remind me of a mountain than the forest Little Red's story is in. Specifically comparing to the original artwork, where she is standing in the front yard of her grandma's house in autumn, which gives a completely different look with all the brown and orange shades. I understand they wanted something differently as otherwise she might have blended color-wise more together with her base.

The bottom of the base shows copyrights for POP Wonderland and Mitto. As far as I know no bootlegs have ever been made of this figure, but it's always good to keep an eye out.

And now for a quick look at the other two display options!

You can also get an better view at the backside of her dress, where it actually looks like the shirt might be a seperate piece, so it's not a dress, but a skirt perhaps? Anyhow, we can now also see the ribbon better and some more otherwise 'hidden' ruffles.

There is one big downside (could be specific to my copy) with the hood and that is a visible gap between the hood and the cape piece. The instructions mention aligning them well, but with my figure the cape keeps on falling down. It's not a huge issue when this figure is displayed from the front or side, but still a bit disappointing.

The hood itself is cutely shaped and the slight point in it really adds to the old fashioned fairytale look.

Size comparison

It was maybe not really obvious by seeing solo pictures of this figure, but she is huge.

This is how the POP Wonderland figures I have so far are displayed. I'm still planning on getting the big Alice and the trading figure Alice sets and then see if I can make a nice display shelf that incorporates both the books and the figure released in this series.

The Points

Positive
- Unexpectedly came with multiple display options
- Overall nice sculpt and paint for her age
- Cute box design

Neutral
- The figure is a bit simple overall, but on the other hand in that way also very true to the original design.
- Could be specific for my copy: The fit of her hood on the backside is not that good.

Negative
- Chipmunk face from certain angles

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
You could debate that it's a bit simple, but overall the sculpt is really nice and except for some small nitpicks like the chunky ribbons and some seamlines, it's all really decent!

Painting 8/10
There was an surprisinly higher amount of shading on this figure than I originally excepted. There are a few small mishaps in paint, but overall it's really nice.

Posing 8/10
Cute posing fitting for the character. The way she holds the basket is very adorable.

Base 8/10
I really appreciate the effort and details on the base, but can't help myself that it feels a bit 'off' for looking so mountain-like.

Packaging 8/10
Really cute box design matching with the figure.

Enjoyment 8/10
This figure had been on my wishlist for a longer time and I was really happy to have gotten her as a gift! She is fun to display with her trading figure mini-me's and getting this figure brings up even more motivation to further collect from POP wonderland!

Wow, did I ever have a review before where all my scores were the same number??

Conclusion

A bit simple in design, but a really decent figure for her age. I generally recommend her if you're a fan of POP his artstyle or if you are looking for cute fairytale-themed figures.

Availability

Originally released for ¥7,480 (which was quite a hefty price in 2008!), she now seems to sell on average for ¥4-6K and with that is a lot cheaper than her counterpart Alice ITEM #286 . Red is not really easy to find, but with a bit of patience and regularly checking the different second hand platforms it is still managable.

And to finish it!

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be about Alter's Hikari from Brave Witches ITEM #520672 !

darkfader (2 måneder siden) #59371603Nice review. I got her and Alice last year. She had a bit of red color transfer on her hair was easy enough to clean.

Thanks for liking the review! :) Yeah, the hair can get easily stained by the red hood unfortunately. I'm still thinking about getting Alice yes/no, as my POP collection is quite varied and I don't want the fairy tale part to overwhelm the rest.

maraiatori (2 måneder siden) #58300687omg i have this figure and i love her so much! hopefully will find alice to go along with her :))

Were you also surprised at how heavy she is? Haha! Looots of PVC. xD

I think she looks nicely displayed with Alice, we're just a bit unlucky at Alice in Wonderland being more popular, thus having a higher sales price. :P

damedanbo (2 måneder siden) #58273957She is soooo lovely! I just saw another post about Pop Wonderland's Alice, and it inspired me to look into the line; so I was actually just eyeing a Akazukin for sale when I saw this... Really a beautiful little figure! I wish they would have continued this line further; I'm looking at Pop's work and I adore the Little Mermaid and Thumbelina illustrations too!
Thanks for the great review. I think I might just buy her tonight!

Oh! Was that blog on here? I missed it and don't see it in the search system. I still want to get Alice, but I'll first get some cheaper other POP Wonderland items I want. ;)

Hehe, keep in mind that this figure is *not* little, though! :D

I wished more of the POP Wonderland books would have gotten (big) figures, I think especially Little Mermaid deserves it. :)

I wish you lots of fun with this figure if you end up buying her! :)

victorviper (2 måneder siden) #58273960That was a good secret Santa gift!
She definitely needs the hood; the figure looks a little off without it.

Indeed! I actually did not expect to get such a big figure, but I was really happy with it! :)

Hrmm without the hood I think she still looks super cute, but you lose the whole relevance to the fairy tale of course. ;)

FixedCamera (2 måneder siden) #58273893Yeah twitter and their website was all I could find but twitter sucks regarding art because endless scrolling is just awful imo. Thats why i like art oriented sites. Granted some of them are turning into endless scrollers too...

There have been some social media sites in the past with accounts impersonating POP (sometimes with crossposting from their Twitter), but they got closed down. I wouldn't be surprised if that DA you mentioned was one of them, actually. >.< I'm afraid Twitter is the best spot, sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Maakie (2 måneder siden) #58273883As far as I know they have no official Pixiv and I haven't heard about them being on DA either, but like a lot of Japanese artists POP seems to be most active on Twitter: twitter.com/pop... So you can follow that account for regular updates, if that was why you were asking. :)
There is also the official website www.ne.jp/asahi... , but it doesn't get as many updates.
