Before starting this review, it's very important to mention that she was Nendoroid #037 released well over 10 years ago. Nendoroids have made incredible changes over the years, but as this is one of the earlier releases, it was made in a way where breakages were easier to occur and you were almost certain you needed to buy spare parts even if the figure was handled normally.

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Moetan is originally a series of (joke) English learning books. If you want to see some of the contents of these books, you can look at this older loot blog of mine: BLOG #25997 . The popularity of these books, later also made an anime being made possible. The anime is a parody on the whole loli and magical girl genre and is very recommendable if you want a good laugh while looking at cute characters.

Ink is a young looking girl, although she is 17, and later 18 in the end of the series. She has a huge crush on a boy called Nao. When the chance comes around for her to become a magical girl and transform into another version of herself with different hair color and cute magical girl outfit, she grabs this chance to become close with Nao, without Nao ever realizing that this 'alter ego' Pastel Ink, is actually the Ink he goes to school with.

The reason why and how I got her

Now this is a funny, but a bit of a long story! A local friend mentioned having this Nendoroid, but as she did not know much about Moetan, had lost interest in it. I knew she liked a couple of items from my sales, so we ended up doing a trade where I got this figure. This older Nendoroid is known for it's fragility and the copy I got from my friend had multiple broken parts (I knew this already upfront). Also, after unboxing it, I shortly broke another part myself (see for that my unboxing of this figure in my loot blog here: BLOG #40999 ).

Considering this figure:
A) Easily broke parts
B) Was not much fun to handle
C) Was sold very cheaply on the aftermarket

That brought me to the conclusion that I should just...you know, get at least three copies of this figure, so that I can handle this figure the least amount needed and display her with her three different faceplates! About half a year and 2 more Nendoroid Inks later, the quest was complete!

Original art

Nowadays it's very common for Nendoroids to get announced with an 2D image of the design before an actual figure is shown. Back when this figure was released, that happened a lot less.

Although this Nendoroid was released about an year after the anime aired, the looks and colors in which the Nendoroid is shaded remind me more of POP's original artworks rather than the anime look.

I feel like a crazy collector, but at the same time I'm also really happy to own three of these figures from one of my most favorite characters ever!

Ink comes in a Nendoroid box that was the common design back then.

Don't be fooled by the backside where it seems like you get an elaborate base with this figure! It actually refers to this Nendoroid being able to fit on the base of Good Smile Company's scaled Ink ITEM #284 figure. I own this figure, but as it's deeply put away in storage, I'll try this display combination another time (probably when I'll review ITEM #284 )!

Like almost all licensed Moetan items, there is a 'Approved By Pastel Ink Cheering Party' authenticity 'stamp' showing Ah-kun on the box.

You get quite a lot of parts thrown at you with this figure! Ink comes with:
- Main body with smiling faceplate and big back ribbon
- Magical Girl wand (lollipop) I actually can't remember if the wand has a name, I think it does not? It has been 3 years since my last re-watch of Moetan, I should watch it again soon!
- Smaller back ribbon (to be used with the chair)
- Chair
- Bored/zoned out faceplate
- Crying faceplate
- Pair of legs so she can sit down
- Two alternative arms with attached hands
- Two alternative extra hands
- Round Nendoroid base (the common base shape before they switched to square)
- Two pegs to hold Ink: one for the Nendoroid base and one for the GSC scaled figure

This figure does not come with it's own assembly sheet. Inside the box are some instructions regarding the special peg the figure comes with to put her on the base of the scaled figure and instructions of how to attach Ink to her regular Nendoroid base. That last one is quite unique! You use the back ribbon to keep the figure positioned on the base well. It actually feels more sturdy placed than a lot of other Nendoroids I own!

So, I opened up my first sealed copy of Ink and...

Back in the Nendoroid beginnings, broken neckjoints were even more an issue than nowadays. The heads would be in comparison to the body be even bigger. It was quite common for a Nendoroid to already arrive with a broken neckjoint after shipment and it's an defect you can't see when the figure is in it's box!

So I went to unbox my other sealed Ink, hoping to have a pristine copy for reviewing and...

So here I am with two Ink's with both a broken neckjoint on the smiling faceplate. Luckily these older Nendoroids came with an neck joint attached to each faceplate, and with a bit of carefully prying around, you can remove each neckjoint and use them for another faceplate. So luckily a broken neckjoint does not actually mean you need to glue this figure or find a replacement, as long as you keep at least one of the three neckjoints she comes with in one piece. With how fragile this Nendoroid is, that is an harder task than it seems!

Another horrible part in the assembly process, and a part that was already broken on my opened Ink, was getting her to hold the staff. There is too little space!

The only safe way to be able to get her to hold her staff hand was by using two pairs of pliers and carefully pushing her hand through the staff.

When I later checked out the staff holding hand from one of the other Ink's, I even saw this huge amount of PVC that would make it even more impossible to have put a staff through her hand here! So if I were ever to use this hand, I would have to cut away some of that PVC with a knife for sure.

Another defect I noticed on one of my Ink's was the paint chipping away at the back of the headpiece. Luckily it was only the back, but this paint coming off looks quite severe, so I try to avoid touching it.

Now, with all the assembly hell being done, it's time to take a look at the three poses I ended up putting my Ink Nendoroids in!

The very cute and 'most default' pose for Ink! Looking all happy and pointing her finger at you! Unboxing this older Nendoroid really makes it clear to me how much different they are from more recently released ones. Ink's head to body ratio is a lot more extreme.

Ink also has joints in her twintails, making it possible to freely move them. They feel just as fragile as the neckjoint though, so I try to touch them the least amount possible. These might not be as easy to replace if they would break...

Ink #1 has some interesting damage at one of the twintail-joints, it looks a bit like rust...

There are a few paint errors and some seamlines to be seen, but overall the hat looks decent. Some of the paint looks a bit 'dirty', although this copy was just unsealed. This is also something common with older figures and could for example also be seen on my other recently reviewed Ink figure: BLOG #43051 .

Ink's outfit is nicely recreated as well. I like the details of the sewn lines and the creases at the bottom. The painted stripes on her collar are also pretty well done!

The green gem on Ink's chest is interpreted differently on every one of her figures, some make it a metallic shiny gem, others just one simple color, for the Nendoroid they went with a transparant and glass-like looking gem. I like the look of it, makes the Nendoroid definitely look a lot higher quality!

The smaller detailed parts of this figure will have different defects with each copy. This Ink's staff has a chunk of PVC missing. The painting of the staff itself looks good and also here we see a transparant gem.

Ink sports her trademark socks, of which one has fallen down. Her blocky shoes are cute looking as well, with all details from the original design implemented.

The age of this Nendoroid shows a lot though, especially in this picture, where you can see from a lot of different pieces quite visible seamlines (her legs, shoes, hand and arm mainly). This is not that common anymore with newer Nendoroids.

Ink #2: Crying and holding out her arm

I wanted to pose this Ink a bit in a way of "Look at what you did!" (waving hand in a direction), or "You owe me an apology!" (holding up hand). This pose makes me wish a bit that she came with a small Ah-kun to blame!

After the disastrous hairjoint of Ink #1, I checked Ink #2 and these look pristine. The hairjoints also feel a bit less flimsy here, but I rather not risk it and touch these the least amount possible.

You might have already seen this a bit on the overview pictures, but the shading of Ink #2's hair is so much better done than Ink #1! The shading is here a lot deeper and the overall color of the hair is a lot darker. This really shows how these mass produced items can still have quite a bit of difference between them with the handpainted parts.

This is also the earlier mentioned Ink with the paint damage on the cap. Luckily not very visible when viewed from up front. This Ink also has less paint issues on the hat compared to #1.

The crying faceplate is also absolutely adorable! The faceplates are really where this Nendoroid shines!

Keeping up with the less consistent quality of these older Nendoroids, Ink #2 has some paint errors on her left sock.

Ink #3: Boredly sitting on the chair

Ink especially comes with an extra pair of legs and a smaller back ribbon so she can sit down on this chair. I wasn't able to fully push the legs in so that no gap would be visible between the legs and main body. I'm curious if other owners of this Nendoroid have the same issue.

Ink #3 has softer hair shading and a bit of paint mishaps in both the hair and cap, making her completely different from Ink #1 and #2 again.

The chair is a really nice general Nendoroid accessory. It feels very sturdy and some small details like screws have been sculpted on it as well.

The bored faceplate can look a bit weird by itself, but when combined with such a pose like this, it's very fitting.

Like I earlier shortly mentioned, I have some issues with Ink's bended legs leaving some gaps between the body.

All together now!

The three of them have very different poses and for me they feel like a set of extra big trading figures this way. I definitely don't regret getting three of them, because I'm such a huge fan of Ink, but wouldn't really recommend getting so much of her unless you are a huge fan like I am. ;)

The Points

Positive
- Lots of display options and especially the chair is a nice accessory to use with other Nendoroids
- Adorable faceplates
- Locks on her base very well with the ribbon keeping it in place

Neutral
- Would have loved a matching Ah-kun to be included with her (for an extra price)

Negative
- Extremely fragile
- Quite a bit of paint errors
- A bit more visible seamlines than I expected

The Scores

Sculpting 7/10
There are quite some nice details in the sculpt, but overall this is Nendoroid shows her age.

Painting 7/10
Depending on each copy, there can be quite some difference in paint. All of them have a bit of different paint defects, some a bit more severe than others.

Posing 6/10
Although I love the different poses this Nendoroid comes with, I have to deduct the points somewhere for it's fragility and I'll do it at the 'posing' department.

Base 8/10
I actually quite like the smaller and rounder base! The back ribbon also gives this figure more stability with attachment to the base, which is quite a difference from my more recent Nendoroids, such as Chris ITEM #464598 / BLOG #42455 !

Packaging 7/10
The older design boxes are a bit less impressive in the looks department than the newer ones, but they protect the figure very well.

Enjoyment 8/10
After the first shock and anger of seeing all the broken parts and after the first careful assembly, my enjoyment grew higher and higher with this Nendoroid. The faceplates are adorable and seeing them on display all three together in a row makes me really happy that I decided to pick up three of them!

Conclusion

This was a really tough Nendoroid to rate! She is absolutely adorable and fans of the source material will love her for sure! However, like a lot of older Nendoroids, she suffers from huge issues with fragile parts and easy breaks. This makes her only good to recommend to fans of this franchise and/or Nendoroid collectors that would like some of her accessories, such as the chair, to use with their own Nendoroids.

Availability

I picked up these Nendoroids when they were going for what was possibly their lowest aftermarket price ever, around ¥2K a piece. This is why I'm not even that mad at all these broken parts and small errors, I only paid a little bit more for her than your average prize figure! Nowadays her prices are a bit higher and she seems to sell for ¥3-4K yen. Keep in mind if you plan on buying her, that there is a huge chance even with sealed copies, that you at least will have one broken neckjoint, it's near impossible to find an completely undamaged one after all these years after her release.

And to finish it!

I re-arranged my Moetan collection a bit so my more recently unboxed Moetan figures would fit here better!

ueggg98 (1 måned siden) #63843605i have her too! she looks so cute and honestly was really good quality for her release date

Fully agree! What kind of pose do you have her in and which faceplate do you use? :)

kyt69 (1 måned siden) #63845750BOOTLEGs?

An item being old and/or of low quality does not mean something is bootleg. All these Nendoroids came from trusted sources.

victorviper (1 måned siden) #63769876Interesting. I didn't realize that older Nendos sometimes had these fragile neck joints. I've got a few older ones like ITEM #5082 that I've never unboxed, and now I'm a little paranoid about breaking them.
Having three copies of this figure means you really like the character! Usually, you're supposed to buy three of an item so you'll have one to display, one to put away unopened, and one to spread the gospel with ;).

Ooh, it might depend on the release you have of Kaito? The 'main 3' of which I hear bad stories about the neckjoints are this Ink, Haruhi Suzumiya and Konata. The proportions of Kaito already seem a bit more 'modern' even though the oldest release has only 1 year time difference. Well, I guess if something is broken on him, it might have already happened to him sealed in the box. So if you ever plan on unboxing him, be prepared you might find something. :( But I hope he is safe! At least older Nendoroids came with 3 neckjoints, newer releases mostly have 1 attached and 1 spare.

Hehe, I broke Konata's golden rules of collecting! Ink is just too cute to keep contained in a box. This Nendoroid is so amazingly cheerful! :)

Om denne bloggen

Welcome to my figure-blog!

I mostly write reviews for this blog, since I like to read and write those kind of articles the most! I also think of them as very useful for other collectors and Japan enthusiasts!

Next to that, I also write tutorials for GK's, loot blogs, cosplay and convention-related articles and guides for hobby-related subjects...just take a look!

I hope you enjoy my articles and feel free to rate and leave comments! :)
