Unauthorized Transaction?Unauthorized Transaction?

dollbyndollbyn1 måned sidenAsk MFC
Well, my smooth selling run had to end somehow. I've had a few hiccups with selling here and there, but it was always only a delayed package or figuring out silly stuff like how to switch a buyer's mailing address after they paid. However, I opened my e-mail this morning and received the dreaded "Case opened" e-mail from Paypal's service account.

My brain started rapid-firing all sorts of panicked questions. What transaction was it? Did I make a mistake packing it? Did I forget something? Did it never reach the buyer? Why didn't they message me on eBay about their concerns? What did I do wrong?! Then my primitive brain managed to read the details of the dispute: Unauthorized transaction.

Oh. Okay. I guess.

What do?

I have zero experiences with disputes as I never had one before, let alone one which was an unauthorized transaction. Everything is still under review I guess, but I assume they might eventually ask for my side of things. It's just so strange since everything on the accounts match up, even the individual's eBay name has a little bit of their real name in there. This case wasn't even started until days after the item in question was successfully delivered.

Anyone else have experience on this front? Should I be nervous about losing the money I made from it? Is the buyer in question trying to pull a fast one? I guess worst case scenario I lose the item and $25 I made off the transaction (which sucks but could be way worse).

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. It turns out the buyer had the wrong PP account attached to their eBay one so it wasn't charged to the correct account. This was their way of fixing the error. I don't completely understand the details, but it is what it is and I suppose I shouldn't worry too much over it, lol.

I've had the experience a couple of times. Once it was related to a divorce/separation so the other spouse did some lockdowns/unauthorized transaction stuff on their joint bank account affecting a bunch of sellers. I remember the buyer was quite surprised to find out their spouse was soon to be an ex spouse.

The other one, I have no idea what it was, because the person got the item and even left positive feedback, and then a few months later, unauthorized transaction appeared. Seemed like the person was trying to do a scam but who knows. They never answered e-mails.

In both cases, I got to keep the money after calling PayPal and providing various proofs. In both cases the money wasn't very much so in one case PayPal just gave me the money because I was a longtime consistent customer and it wasn't my fault.

Now they have the "seller protection" jazz so it may be more straightforward. But if you have questions, I'd suggest phoning them. I've found their phone support more helpful than e-mail support (e-mail support was just copy-pasting form answers).

I've never had to deal with this before, but maybe its a parents account and the kid used it to buy something? PP should have a message history thing you can look at if they left anything in there.

Otherwise I think the tracking and proof of delivery should be enough considering it was only opened a few days after delivery.

FlyingToNowhere (1 måned siden) #64147133I doubt you have anything to worry about as long as you have the tracking number. I dealt with that earlier this year, all I had to do was input the tracking number into paypal to show that I completed my part of the sale, and the case was closed pretty quickly. I'm not sure if they refunded the buyer or anything.
I'm glad your case was resolved with ease, hopefully it will be the same for me. :) Thanks for your input.

Drizzyrissy (1 måned siden) #64147102If it’s an unauthorized transaction as the buyer claims, then I would think PayPal would refund both of you. Since it’s in no way your fault or the postal service, they can’t expect you to fork over money and a product for a transaction that was possibly a scam. There’s no way to claim insurance on it as you would with a postal carrier issue, and there’s no fault on you for product not as described. If you do actually lose your money though I’d be extremely surprised and disappointed in paypal. Sometimes I wonder what our protection fees are even for.
This is what I'm gleaning from their policies. I have proof of delivery and all the information had been consistent on their accounts, so I had no reason to suspect it being unauthorized. That's what's so confusing about it, everything matches up and it's really not so simple to change addresses on Paypal. As terrible as it sounds, I'm kind of thinking it's a scam because the account has zero feedback. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
