Review: Sengoku Nadeko (Alter)Review: Sengoku Nadeko (Alter)

galabluegalablue1 måned sidenReview
(´。`) I'm so sleepy this weekend. I've been working non stop and I have my final project due this weekend. It's so wonderfully raining so I want to just curl up with a cup of tea and a good book. Well ... What's the best way to put off doing your final project? Cleaning your room, and then taking pictures of figures!

I was going to go and take some pictures of Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho, but then the worst thing happened -- a peg in his foot broke (BLOG #44392)! My dad is going to try to help me fix it, but it totally put a wrench in my plans for today.

However, because of that ... You guys get to have a review of one of my favorite figures in my collection -- ITEM #117956, Alter's Sengoku Nadeko!

BACKSTORY

When I first started watching Monogatari, Hanekawa was my best girl in the show. I really love Hanekawa's character. She's someone that always stands by the MC even though he's completely flawed and even though he's picked another woman. However, I really didn't like how they treated her character arc later in the series, so she's fallen out of my top spot ... but she is still in my top three.

The reigning champion as far as my Monogatari rankings go is definitely Sengoku, and no, not the View spoilerHide spoilerMedusa version. When I finally got to her final arc, I kind of had an "ah-hah" moment, realizing that I identify a lot with Sengoku. This is a little embarrassing to admit, but I relate to her "demure" but "sexual" appeal, and I also really liked her revelation of View spoilerHide spoiler"I only like things I can't have so I can't get hurt". This revelation was a huge moment for me personally because, well, I do that exact same thing in relationships.

When the show ended, I immediately set out to find a figure of hers for my collection, and I settled on this one. I purchased the figure from a very kind private seller on MFC, MIB, and it arrived to my house quickly and in perfect condition. I would recommend that anyone purchase from the seller (SKUTTLE36), because I had a great experience with them.

Side note: it was my birthday last week and my dad got me some Hue lighting for my room, just to test out before I redo my cabinetry (because he wants to put it everywhere lol), and I've totally been going crazy with the lighting. So please excuse the fact on how I decided to light my figure photo shoot ... I just couldn't help myself.

BOX

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344683.jpeg

I really love this box. It's plastic, which I don't typically like, but I feel like it fits the figure so well. The blister packaging inside was perfect and I like the compact size of it. Also, it's impossible to tell from my photographs, but the paper insert is of bamboo leaves, which fits with her character's arc perfectly. More pictures and comments under the spoiler.

The box shows Sengoku with both set ups that she can have. With her jacket/hat and wink, and then without with her blushing face. I wish there was some original art of the character, but I love the pop art feel that reminds me of her intro song.

BASE

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344688.jpeg

I actually really love this base. I like the fall maple leaf design, and she's very sturdy. I have zero complaints about this base, especially because of the size of it. It's compact and doesn't take up so much space on the shelf.

FIGURE

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344691.jpeg

Sengoku is just so cute! But before we dive in, there are a few things that come with the figure itself.

A set of instructions is conveniently inside the figure, because you WILL need to read them in order to change her face plate and place her jacket on. View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344687.jpeg

Sengoku comes with two faces, a jacket, and a hat. View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344690.jpeg

I don't know if you can see it, but I have paint transfer inside of her jacket, because I always display it with it on. More on that later.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344689.jpeg

This face is just way too cute. Her eyebrows give her the sweetest expression

Sengoku without her jacket. I really love her posing, with her fingers interlaced behind her back. If you're wondering: yes, I have tried to replicate this pose. And I have succeeded a few times, but it is difficult. So it might not be the most "realistic" pose in the world, but it is a very super cute one. I like the girlish charm that the figure has, and I feel like it matches her character perfectly.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344697.jpeg

A close up of her face. Her winking face plate is really cute, but it's not the one I display her with. When I first recieved her in the mail, my dad was sitting next to me as I opened her, and I asked her which face he liked better. He chose her blushing one, so that's the one I use! But her wink is awfully cute and a little mischevious.

Of course Sengoku is going to have a seam on the top of her head because that's how you change her face, but I chose not to include it. Instead, I'd rather focus on her hair. Sengoku doesn't have "typical" anime hair -- but it's sculpted EXACTLY how it is in the show, and I just love that!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344698.jpeg

I absolutely LOVE the sleeves on her shirt. I think they are my favorite part of her design. I love how they are sculpted and how her sleeves seem to naturally fall. It gives a flow to the figure when she doesn't have the movement from her jacket. I also love her little satchel, and I think it's designed well.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344699.jpeg

Another shining moment for me in this figure are her interlaced fingertips. She has just a little bit of nail polish on each finger. They really didn't skimp in this part of the sculpt.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344707.jpeg

Sengoku's shoes are nothing to write home about, but are faithful to her character's design in the show, along with the cuffing of her jeans. I will say that I feel like the painting on her jeans can be a little flat in places.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344700.jpeg

So I've had this figure since 08/24, and I have only placed her jacket on once (when I first displayed the figure) and off once (this review). She has paint transfer on her shoulder and on the side of her shirt. For me it's not a big deal, because I always like to load my figures up with all accessories, but it's definitely something to watch out on. I had a feeling her shoulder would have the transfer but was surprised to see her shirt having it. I think it's just because of how you have to place the jacket on.

In order to put the jacket on, you remove Sengoku's bangs, and then the back of her hair. You then are able to change the face by pulling up on it if you so please. In order to place her jacket, you have to slide it over her shoulders, which can be a little difficult at times. Then, you place the back of her hair back on, and match it with the bangs. When placing the back of the hair back on, you may have to move the jacket to get it to fit better.

*ahem*, I just read the instructions again, and apparently you're supposed to attach the jacket to the fully formed head and then stick it on. So perhaps this is why I have some paint transfer elsewhere, but I believe I tried to do this and I had difficulty because of the hair sculpt fitting the jacket properly.

Now, on to her jacket and hat!

Ah, yes, my girl is just so cute. This jacket and hat is really what made me purchase the figure! I think she is just way too adorable! This is one of my favorite outfits she wears in the show.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344705.jpeg

The jacket has great detail for the price of the figure (originally priced at 7,800JPY, around 71USD now). I love the little bow and collar, and how well the jacket flows. Honestly, the sculpt of this jacket gives me life. I love how the sleeves have a mind of their own. It's almost like she's standing on the top of a grassy hill on a spring day as the breeze picks up, standing up right after a picnic. It just gives me great vibes!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344709.jpeg

Sengoku's blushing face is awfully cute. I love her little open mouth smile. I also love how you can adjust her hat. Unlike ITEM #166882 (BLOG #44012), who also sports a hat, Sengoku's hat does not include a magnet. It allows you to move it up and down, or to block her eyes as if she's being shy. I like to move the hat around depending on my own mood.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344706.jpeg

For some reason, in this picture, I really felt like putting her hat way back, lol! I love how her jacket wraps around her clothing and you can still see through her jacket. You can also see her fingertips peeking out, which is so super cute! Gah, the sculpt of this jacket ... I just love it.

COMPARISONS

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344712.jpeg

ITEM #91359 and Sengoku look pretty good together, on account that they both have off the shoulder jackets. Has anyone actually tried (and succeeded) to place their jackets stylishly over their shoulders? I have yet to. I have paint transfer on both of these figures, and probably should put blister on their shoulders.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344710.jpeg

ITEM #78404 and Sengoku both have that super peppy vibe about them, but if you've seen their respective shows, you can see how dark it could get.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/12/07/2344711.jpeg

If you didn't know any better, you might think that ITEM #20329 and Sengoku could be the same character. Osaka is such a cutie sitting there in 1/7 with her inner tube. Both characters are wide eyed, slow talking, loveable girls.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I'm really glad I purchased this figure. It's one that continually gives me joy every time I look at her. I can't wait to rearrange my shelving in my room to give her a better spot on my shelf. My favorite part of this figure is clearly her jacket's sculpt, but I also love her interchangeable expressions, her hair, her base, her hat, her hands, and her posing. Basically, I just love this figure!

The head seam when you change the face plates is not that noticeable, surprisingly, and is well hidden by her hat.

There are only two "faults" to this figure, and I feel like the first one (paint transfer) is my fault. The second one would be the painting of her jeans, which I feel is a little flat in comparison to the rest of her stylistically.

Thanks so much for reading my review! I guess it's time for me to get back to writing my paper on the "History of Bitterness" ... it's super hard to be bitter when looking at Sengoku, that's for sure! (⺣◡⺣)♡*

I hope you guys have a great rest of your weekend!

LittlePisces (1 måned siden) #71530594She's a cutie! I like how you show your love for your favorite girl by relating to her. Alter did do a good job on this figure. I've heard they're known for high quality, yet they usually do figures of series that I'm not too familiar with.

thank you so much!!

yeah, come to think of it, she's the only figure by alter i own. maybe i should check out some of their others since i love this one so much lol.

CaptainZ (1 måned siden) #71507839Very underrated figure from back when prices were reasonable.
I miss those days

yes, i love "older" (not too old, but still older lol) figures because they aren't overly complicated but still have a nice attention to detail and were a good price. i really love how they remained faithful with her hair sculpt. i have a feeling that, even when i add to my shelf with expensive preorders, she will still be one of my favorites.

BHEITHIR (1 måned siden) #71508028Must agree with you, man. The nice review adds more points on what she's worth too!

thank you so much! i don't really think i did this figure justice. i was being a spazz today and i feel like i had a lot of focus issues with my camera haha. but she's absolutely adorable and i just love this figure!

cute (1 måned siden) #71507616good review, she's super cute!! i wasn't a huge fan of monogatari but nadeko was my fave too, along with senjougahara. i also found her really relatable tbh

ahhh thank you! again with the cute comment (see above), she's definitely even cuter in person. the longer i am away from watching monogatari the less i remember liking it as a whole rather than liking moments from it. her whole revelation as a character was pretty stunning to me because it's like ... it was there all along, not only in the character but inside of me, so i was like okay i see what's going on here lol! glad i'm not alone.

galablue (1 måned siden) #71506151haha, and of course, that's the version i want! CLASSIFIED #189984 I purchased my Mami Tomoe figure from this seller, so if anyone is willing to shell out that kind of money for Tsukihi, I can confirm that this seller is great ... or you can just not buy it, so I can nab it later x)
No worries there, already completed my full Monogatari collection last year.
It took a little while, but I finally hunted down a NIB limited Tsukihi from Japan for ~1.5x retail shipped, which is about as good as it gets.

whobdaplaya (1 måned siden) #71506120Nice review! If memory serves, she was the easiest and lowest-price GSC Monogatari scale to find when I was looking last year. The so called "alternate" color version of ITEM #162017 was by far the hardest to find.
