REVIEW: Alter Melty de Granite figure
https://i.postimg.cc/qR5S5zVf/whipped-ice-cream-chocolate-vanilla-cones-45749925.jpg

Picture-heavy review.
This review marks another addition to my collection that I have (happily) obtained solely based on aesthetics, and it is the Melty de Granite figure from the Shining Hearts role-playing game, manufactured and released by Alter in 2013. She is a rather old figure but I decided to do a review for her anyway because... why not? ;D I do not know the Shining Hearts game or the character and have remained ignorant of the figure until I happened to come across her photos on this site. I absolutely loved the design and colours and thought she would be a great figure to have so I ordered her. Melty is a witch with ice magic, and the figure is based off this cute colourful art.

I purchased her preowned for a total equivalent of JPY 7,400 inclusive of shipping, which was not too bad given the large size of the figure box. The figure arrived nicely on Christmas Eve, but I had to put off the proper unboxing of her till mid-January due to my exams.

This is my first figure from Alter so I was really anticipating the figure, given the usually fantastic reviews for the company.

THE BOX & PACKAGING: 9.0/10
https://i.postimg.cc/qR5S5zVf/whipped-ice-cream-chocolate-vanilla-cones-45749925.jpg

The box is big and wide across the front. It is a pink-and-white box, really quite simple but pretty with the pastel colours. There are windows revealing the figure over the front, top and one side of the box.

https://i.postimg.cc/Pr7XG5HM/20200113-131945.jpg

On one side of the box, we have the pretty art that this figure was based off and the back has multiple images of the figure.

The bottom of the box carries standard information text and the authenticity sticker.

Ultimately, the box design comes off really simple but the decorative pink corner borders against the white background give the box a nice classy feel. The quality of the box is also really good (I do not know if this is a trademark of Alter's as this is my first Alter figure), the cardboard used is of a more expensive type - it is stiff, much harder and smoother in texture and I really like it a lot.

The packaging is really secure. It comes with an instruction sheet that tells you how to fix what to what, but there's no need for it - the set-up is pretty much self-explanatory.

THE BASE: 9.5/10
https://i.postimg.cc/qR5S5zVf/whipped-ice-cream-chocolate-vanilla-cones-45749925.jpg

This base is one of the more unique ones I have seen, and I definitely love these over the standard flat one-coloured bases that are more commonly utilized. The base here is of a white dessert plate with an ice cream cone holder with a removable ice cream cone. The text 'Melty' and 'Shining Hearts' are printed in pink with the lovely image of Sorbet over the front part of the base. The dessert plate is made of light plastic and really looks like a standard one you could actually get at a cafe. The cone holder is made of clear acrylic material and is thick and seems very sturdy despite the small surface area of attachment to the plate. I also love that the inside of the holder has small grooves that function to secure the position of the ice cream cone so it doesn't move once placed into the holder.

https://i.postimg.cc/QNn7mzSK/20200113-134824.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/cLGr5G3C/20200113-134911.jpg

The separate piece of ice cream cone carries two fixed scoops of ice cream - likely the flavours of strawberry and vanilla, going by the colour ;) The ice cream itself carries substantial weight and fits easily into the cone holder.

The ice cream is very realistic in texture and sight - the sculpt and paint are fantastic for such an effect! The area where the Melty figure sits on the ice cream even has a melted appearance, which was a nice touch!

THE SCULPT & PAINT: 9.0/10
https://i.postimg.cc/qR5S5zVf/whipped-ice-cream-chocolate-vanilla-cones-45749925.jpg

The overall figure is made up of five parts: the ice cream base, the Melty figure and three accessories - Melty's hat (I forgot to include the hat in the photo), a tiny ice cream cone and Sorbet (Melty's cute familiar).

https://i.postimg.cc/J0ZVgvwc/20200113-141908.jpg

I love the sculpt and paint of Melty's face and hair, I think her facial features and hair are well detailed. The eyes and brows are painted beautifully, and she has her cute tongue out for the ice cream. Her fringe is sculpted well. The long hair ends over both sides of her face were somewhat blunt (it's just a preference but I personally prefer sharp hair tips on figures).

https://i.postimg.cc/kgpC2xyS/20200113-142144.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/Yq8MHcGb/20200113-142154.jpg

While there is a lack of shading in her hair, I personally wasn't too bothered by it and really loved the waves in her hair. Again, hair tips not as sharp as I would like them to be. Her heart shaped earrings are there but hidden behind the hair.

https://i.postimg.cc/m2TBJZDP/20200113-142255.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/2y7myMHj/20200113-142349.jpg

Moving on to the dress, her black corset dress is very nice and detailed with the pink ruffles. I love the black gloves and socks with the crisscrossing white lines, I think they did a great job with it - there are tiny insignificant messes at several bits but otherwise they look flawless. Equal attention was paid to the ribbons and white lace too.

https://i.postimg.cc/bN5VbLKq/20200113-142208.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/mZ85ZTjz/20200113-142332.jpg
The black-and-pink garters are detailed well too. And I love that they did the texture of the pink underside of her skirt so well, despite it not being visible in normal display position (photo under spoiler due to it being an indirect panty shot).

The black socks are equally detailed as the gloves, and I love her white platform heels!

https://i.postimg.cc/QdW4q131/20200113-142236.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/cC99FcCM/20200113-142227.jpg
Melty's witch hat is a nice touch - it is magnetic and attaches to her head without need for pegs (I am no fan of pegs). The hat is very well detailed with the pink ribbon and white lace, even the white string with the heart piece dangling at the end is very nicely painted. The underside pink ribs of the hat, like the skirt, is sculpted well.

The Sorbet accessory is adorable, and very nicely done too, as the rest of the figure. Sorbet comes attached to a pretty dessert spoon with heart-shaped patterns (love the thorough use of hearts and ice cream with this figure XD). Sorbet is smiling and in flight, holding an ice cream in one hand and an ice cream stick in the other. The spoon attaches into a deep groove in the yellow ice cream.

The last accessory is the miniature ice cream cone that fits in Melty's left hand. There are no pegs or magnets, you just have to wedge the cone into her hand and I faced no problem doing it. I think this accessory is also well done, there are no paint bleeds that are jarring.

THE POSE: 10.0/10
https://i.postimg.cc/qR5S5zVf/whipped-ice-cream-chocolate-vanilla-cones-45749925.jpg

I am actually giving full marks for posing because I love her pose! Her dainty sitting position with her leg out gives a very playful and lovable vibe about the figure. The back has a nice view of her hat and wavy hair, as well as the yellow ice cream and the spoon.

The side views are also very pretty.

FINAL THOUGHTS
https://i.postimg.cc/qR5S5zVf/whipped-ice-cream-chocolate-vanilla-cones-45749925.jpg

I love this Melty figure, she is definitely a very pretty and unique figure! Her pastel colours are beautiful, the paint and sculpt done very nicely and her base is fantastic.

When I first saw this figure and decided to get her, I was dreading the price I would find in the aftermarket - especially after years and she being an Alter figure, no less. So you could imagine my surprise (pleasant, though) when I found the figure to be a great bargain now compared to her release price, which is also surprising because I thought she was an excellent figure and therefore a likely sought-after one (and she apparently is, being the Top 80th/100 most wished figure on MFC). At her current price, she is well worth the money!

The box for this figure is rather big, and shipping may be costly even if the figure price is very good. For example, AmiAmi only ships this figure with EMS/DHL because they do not have boxes to fit the Registered SAL method.

I did not find any major issues to complain about, though I was rather apprehensive about the durability of the small ice cream cone holder base. As seen in the photos, this Melty figure definitely has substantial weight over one side as she perches forward - and the ice cream itself is already rather heavy. I had put up a question about long-term damage issues on the figure page, and a user had recently answered me that she had had the figure displayed for 6 years now without problems so that's some real fantastic news!

There is a Christmas red variant of this figure ITEM #176819, also released in 2013 but I personally feel that the original version boasts a better colour scheme. The red-and-green theme in that figure is definitely eye-catching but they had used the same ice cream as this version, and so the colours do not really match. Though if you are building a Christmas-themed display, I daresay she would still look fantastic.

In my personal opinion, this is the best Melty figure in the market, and I would rate this figure a 9.0 out of 10.

PROS
- Beautiful pastel colour scheme
- Great sculpt
- Unique base
- Bargain price
- Magnetic hat, no need for troublesome pegs

CONS
- Tiny messy paintwork at places (not significant)
- Large box (less-than-friendly shipping)

Thanks for reading, and till another entry! :)

Thank you, and I believe you won't regret purchasing her (especially at her current price now) :D I personally think she's really well done for a figure made 7 years ago.

victorviper (10 dager siden) #73863968Thanks for this review, as it's always nice to see reviews of older items. It's hard to believe this figure was released almost 7 years ago!
I'd never really paid much attention to the ice cream before, but it looks remarkably realistic!

And thank you for reading! The ice cream is one of my favourite parts of the figure - I am actually thinking of doing up a dessert-themed figure display just because of her XD

Cloudberry (10 dager siden) #73863980Thanks for sharing. It's nice to read reviews, even if the figure is "old". To me, I'd probably never heard of it before so it's new to me!
The figure has such a unique base and is not typical for most figure we see nowadays. I think the ice cream served standing up on a plate makes it feel really fancy.
I love the black and pink combo!!! I think they both work very well with each other and I think it's cute that the pink is on the underside of her awesome frilly dress, garter belt, and hat. I also think those white crisscross pattern on her stockings and arm gloves breaks up the black-ness of her outfit, making her pop out even more <3 The illustrator must have a great artistic mind when they made her.

Thank you for the kind comment! I actually wrote the review hoping to expose newer collectors (like myself) who knew little about the older figures before - so I was happy that you just got to know of the figure :D

Yes, I totally agree about her design - I think she's really rather dainty and eyecatching.
