Swearing off pre-orders?Swearing off pre-orders?Ask MFC

Hey all! I'm sure many of you can relate to feeling like you need to get your spending under control... I've been saying this myself for the better part of a year. I have managed to majorly cut back on impulse spending on older pre-owned figures by decreasing the amount of time I browse various shops. The problem I'm truly having is when orders get delayed and delayed, and then I end up with like 7 or 8 figures releasing in the same month, such as what I'm afraid is going to happen in June:

https://i.ibb.co/KjgjsS0/ouchies.png

Although I'm 100% sure ITEM #179391 will delay, that is still adding up to about $1,000 USD or more if nothing else does, and many items in that month have already delayed multiple times, so I'm running off the assumption that they will not delay again. (I do have the funds for this order, just hate the idea of spending so much on one hobby in one month since it could go to something else.)

So, have any of you sworn off pre-orders? If so, has it helped your spending at all, and in what way? Do you make exceptions for "must-have" items (like favorite characters or re-released grails)? How else do you keep track of your budget?

Thanks for reading!

kotorii3 måneder siden#78518935Every time you make a pre-order, you should always have that money set aside. When things are inevitably delayed you won't have to worry if things stack up because you already in a way "paid" for it. It doesn't seem like you are struggling with this since you said you have the funds but its more of how comfortable you are with spending that much into the hobby. No matter what you were going to end up spending $1,000. Still sit yourself down and write out a budget of what you are comfortable with. In terms of hobby budgeting, I like thinking annually. I personally don't feel comfortable spending $1,000 in a calendar year on this hobby, no matter how much I love it. ( I also have other hobbies and pets.) Doing that really puts things into perspective on how much money is being allocated to necessities and hobbies. You'll find yourself saving more and you won't have to swear off pre-orders.

TBH it is more about the sudden realization of just how much I'm putting into the hobby due to the huge expenditure that's going out in one month. If it's here and there it just doesn't hit as hard and it's easy for me to lose track (how I ended up with order after order of older figures which I have managed to cut back on significantly!), which is why at the time of pre-ordering I think "yes this is something I can afford now" but I've done that for 3 other items in the same month.

I appreciate everyone's input and think I will not only cut back on pre-orders by limiting the number per month I allow but also holding off on hitting the PO button until I give myself at least a few weeks to think about whether I really truly can't go without having it. And I started keeping a book today as well to keep track more easily of what's coming out when.

Glad to know I’m not the only one. Personally, I do not spend responsibly on figures. I am financially on the edge at all times. Right when I think I’m screwed, I figure out a way to pick up extra jobs or hustle to make some money. I hear all these people talking about fiscal responsibility, but not everyone has their shit together. When I started out, I liked the system with AmiAmi, but over time I have realized that stores that make you pay up front for a PO are probably better for my spending tendencies. The only figures I actually set money aside for are the few expensive resin figures that I have PO over a year in advance. Also, I have acquired so many figures in the past four months that I couldn’t even begin to have a place to display it. So, I feel that struggle as well.

I'm hoping to swear pre-orders of for the most part and reduce the collecting significantly as I'm nearly graduated from University and need to start thinking about living on my own and all the costs that come with it and to be honest all the new responsibiities that come with it scare me to death let alone manage the pressure that comes with constant pre-orders

CaptainZ3 måneder siden#78472294Don't get me wrong I love Hestia but, there are so many other Danmachi girls that could use merch.

Sorry if this gets a bit off-topic, but that's exactly what I'm saying (Mikoto, Haruhime, Naaza (one of my favorites), Ryuu, Syr, Lili, Freya, Tione, Tiona etc). Danmachi is loaded with top tier waifu characters that could use figures and that's only the girls, I mean even the main character still has no scale XD

When you place the pre-order, don't you already have the money to pay for the item? And if not, do you not consider that X amount of money in your future paychecks will go to paying for it? So, then why does it matter that multiple orders have been delayed to the same month? What is the difference between paying $1,000 on the tenth month and paying $100 for the next ten months? My point is that your perception of how much more money you're spending in a month is flawed, because it's the same amount (unless you've not been setting aside the pre-order money all along). If instances like this cause you to become uncomfortable with how much you are spending, then it's probably time you start easing back with pre-order commitments. I tend to make orders with this concept in mind. If the juice isn't worth the squeeze, I don't squeeze in the first place.

I feel you, I have something like 140,000yen worth of pre-orders over June/July/August. Shipping and duties on top are going to kill me.

Not swearing off ordering more since most of the stuff I want is scheduled for 2021 at this point, and that is future Torakatsu's problem. I did however cancel 4 scales due for this time period by the grace of Amiami's covid olive branch.

I'm in almost the same exact boat (with something like 7 from Hobbysearch and 2 from AmiAmi just for June alone, not to mention July and August). Figure prices have been skyrocketing and unfortunately, I love dynamic figures.

While I have my eye on a few things, I'm delaying any additional preorders (hopefully) until my work situation (being furloughed due to COVID) is figured out, and gaging what will actually release in June and what might be delayed (again).

Still, a good deal is a good deal and I have my eye on a ton of figures (via wishlist) so if something pops up for a good price that I wasn't expecting, it's hard to resist... Even though my star system is all wrong, if it's a favorite character I'm 200% more likely to pull the trigger. ITEM #943143, ITEM #887979, ITEM #898582 are all items I will end up pre-ordering before the window closes; ITEM #841403, ITEM #947676, ITEM #886920 is waifu and I love her with all my heart; and of course there's Lelouch being released, more Miku designs, might pull the trigger on those Touhou I've shortlisted, and unfortunately, I can't resist anything Myethos pumps out :'(

I had a horrible stint with being happy go lucky with my credit cards and preorders when I was deep into my obsession and it overwhelmed me to the point where I couldn't find the motivation to even manage preorder giveaways--so I stick to a more reasonable budget per month and try to calculate a more realistic projection in terms of disposable income.

Now if only I could find the room to display even half of what I own...

What I do when a figure I preordered gets delayed is paying for it in the month it was supposed to be released. This way the amount of ¥ won't actually built up.

Money has been kept aside for my old PO. As for the newer PO, I sort of stop ordering unless it is a series i absolute love or I feel that the aftermarket will be mean eg. Jojo, kny, ngnl, etc.

At the end of the day, I feel that knowing your holy grails is the best way for one to sort out his/her PO and aids alot in weeding out the "nice to have" figures. Personally use MFC to keep track of holy grail figures and have a simple excel list to allow myself more clarify in sorting out my collection.

darkfader3 måneder siden#78471068I placed a ¥ 93520 order with 4 figures not so long ago at N-Y and already paid. Not sure when they ship it though. Release date ranging from 2020-09-30 to 2021-05-31, heh. Also before that Sakura, Grim Aloe, Aoi. And I have two Native figures paid for already.
Still unpaid is I-19 from AmiAmi(.jp forwarding). I better not miss the payment e-mail since it will be in Japanese.
I hate NY , I have more than 11 figures fully paid and I didn’t get them yet . so I managed to cancel all my pre order from them luckly they didn’t close my account , but the truth I don’t care any more . I don’t like to deal with them any more .
