After examining my preorders and my own spending in BLOG #45862 I was interested to see what others thought was a good deal in regards to preorders and what it's really worth to them. Last night, I was laying in bed and I started thinking just about the money we all spend and what is "OK" for some people isn't for others ... so, I thought up a little question that I could ask you all, and it comes in the form of a "versus" question.

Please do not include preorders you have not already paid for, but feel free to include preorders that you HAVE paid for (but may not currently have in your possession). Also please don't include figures that were gifted to you -- just ones you have spent your hard earned money on.

I want to know ...

1) What's the most expensive figure you have ever purchased? Do you feel like it was worth it? What's the story behind it? Was it a grail? Knowing what you know now as a collector, would you still have purchased it for that price?

2) What's the best deal you have ever gotten on a figure? This is not necessarily the "cheapest" figure in your collection, but the one you feel like you really got a good deal. How did you get it? Do you feel like the deal was worth it? Did you get it with any damage, and if so, do you wish you would have gotten it NIB instead (even at a larger price?)?

3) Which figure do you like better? The more expensive one, or the one you got a better deal on?

I'll start out...

ITEM #851376 The most expensive figure I have purchased. I don't have her in my possession yet but I preordered her and paid in full. A lot of people have gotten her and she is pretty stellar looking. Why don't I have her yet? Well, I ordered her from Crunchyroll. She was my third preorder ever and I didn't really understand how to preorder from certain shops, so I just preordered her from somewhere that I thought I could trust. She still hasn't come in to stock on their site, so I am a little disappointed. I feel like I paid more but am getting her slower. I wouldn't buy figures off of Crunchyroll knowing what I know now, and I wish I had preordered her from somewhere else.

That said, the best deal I ever got was probably ITEM #549426 which I just ordered. Man, I see this figure going anywhere from 300-400USD NIB. GSC had that surprise sale where I managed to get this figure for 192USD, which was the original price! I was so stoked when I got it, and I think the figure looks amazing. I only wish I had looked at other figures they were selling during this sale. Also, this was a grail for me, so I am just so stoked to have gotten it for original price.

ITEM #317824 I also got for a very good deal IMO. I got her NIB from a seller for 190USD. I know that's still around 50USD more than she originally goes for, but I see this figure NIB for 286, and I've even seen her opened and displayed for over 200.

In the end, I definitely think the good deals are better than the more expensive figure I paid for. In my own instance, I feel like I bought the more expensive figure partly because I just didn't know how the figure community worked. Knowing what I know now, I'm still a little more savvy to spending less, but I have a long way to go!

What about you guys?

XD sorry, couldn't resist after what you said. It's crazy that people bombard you and ask for things that you don't even have for sale! It's a cool statue though and I'm glad you have one of the better DN items! He looks rad.

Well, if it's $1000000... :D But jokes aside, people would randomly come to me and offer me 50-100% of his aftermarket value...which is just weird. If I was willing to sell him for such prices I would have put him up for sale. You have to make a really good offer to someone that is not willing to sell something for them to let go of it.

Yes, and even though newer DN items have come out, I am really not happy with how Light his face looks on his other figures. So I think he will remain 'the grail of DN figures' for a while more. :) Which is cool for me, but not so cool for the others that hope to have a chance to own him. :I

It's ITEM #41112 and it was definitely worth it. I felt like he was going to get only more rare and expensive and I was right! Sometimes I'm even a bit scared to post around that I have this figure, because I have been bombarded in the past with people throwing me offers for him (while I don't even have him up for sale or am interested to sell him).

I remember buying ITEM #12994 for a bit under retail in 2010. Shop advertised her normal edition, but I ended up getting her limited edition! Later her aftermarket price shot up and because it's the limited edition with an extra face she is even more valuable now.

3) Which figure do you like better? The more expensive one, or the one you got a better deal on?

Light...haha! He's a polystone/resin statue and most PVC figures will not beat that quality. ;)

1) My most expensive figure is ITEM #79384 I got it from a local online seller for a very high price at about 8000 yen (about 76$ or 1.120.000IDR in my currency). I've never spent so much money before so as a student with uncertain allowance and income, I considered it very expensive (lol). Anyway, I got it in new, sealed condition BUT unfortunately, I got a defect item - the joint between its head and neck is very loose so I need to be extremely careful when posing him in a pose that involves head movement. I was willing to spend that much because I like Izanagi so much and it is very difficult to find Izanagi right now in the local sellers or international websites such as amiami and others even for the pre-owned ones.

2) As for my best deal, ITEM #116129 and ITEM #115884 should be one of my best deal. They are my very first original nendoroids (cuz I realized that my very first Nendoroid was actually a bootleg -__-, fortunately I only own this one bootleg for years after I got nanoha and fate) and both of them actually come in a single WonFest 2012 Summer limited box. Their price tag is about 5700yen (about $55 / 800.000IDR) but I got them for about 3464yen (about $33.45 / 485.000IDR) in a local hobby shop in new condition, so I could this is a pretty good deal - getting a limited item as my 'true' very first Nendoroid and not only one, but two at the same time :D

And my second best deal is ITEM #137936 I got from a local seller just recently for about $15 (1535 yen / 215000IDR) - almost half of her original price. She is pre-owned but looks completely like new, only losing a single protector plastic sheet on the front of the figure while the rest of her accessories are still sealed and the figure itself doesn't suffer from any defects. I consider it a grail because I've never got or even seen an original figma sold at such a cheap price even for a pre-owned. I just guessed it maybe because Hidamari Sketch can be said as a very unpopular anime in my place (Indonesia) so the local seller would sell Hidamari's stuff as cheap as possible just for it to be sold.

EDIT:
3) From the aforementioned items, I would choose Izanagi because for me, an emotional connection with the character is very important so I'd choose Izanagi over the latter two items if I happened to not having all of them and should choose only 1 item. The price is maybe too high but at least I can enjoy doing anything with a figure of character with I closely feel a connection with.

However, if thinking about collection in general, especially for the characters I don't really fond of, I'd choose the figure I can get a better deal on. Besides of me being a student with uncertain amount of allowance and income, I'm not a perfectionist that wants his figure to be perfectly sculpted, has flawless paint job, 100% source-accurate look, etc etc so prize figure usually satisfy me enough in figure-collecting hobby. For example, between ITEM #809191 and ITEM #781017, I really love her character but I'd choose the prize one to get over the scaled ones. Because, they come in almost similar pose (or exactly the same, I guess) so getting either the prize or scaled ones has similar value for me, also because I don't really want to spend such a big money for a visually plain-looking figure like that (she's just standing and looking sideway without anything at all). If I get sufficient money, I'd choose ITEM #78365 over Rikka's scale figure - almost half the price but doesn't look plain (and tbh I think Gert's figure should be the one at 14800Yen price tag lol).

My most expensive is ITEM #929486 I know it’s a pre order but damn I paid like $350 for that and now it’s like $800 on some sites they have it still on TOM but that’s expensive as well so I think by proxying my order I got a good deal on it

1) My most expensive figure is: ITEM #2187 , I think I paid $500 after shipping/mark up for preordering. She's worth double that now. I don't regret it at all and it was only a miracle I could get her (aka a very loving gf, now my wife)

2) The best deal I've gotten on a figure is difficult. I often preorder things so there really isn't a "deal" to be had. One I do remember is this one: ITEM #17381 I got him for $80.00 in 2005 or so, with some damage and no box.

3) The more expensive one, even if the deal had been pristine, its a matter of which character I love more. Character dictates my choice more than cost. :)

1) The most expensive figure in my collection to date is the Myethos Stardust that I purchased for JPY 18,000 - the total came up to JPY 20,900 inclusive of shipping and customs. It was a grail, but it still hurt me nonetheless because I have always considered my total price limit (including shipping) for PVC scale figures to be below JPY 20k. She currently remains the only figure in my collection in which I had broken the limit rule. Knowing what I know now as a collector, would I still have purchased her for that price? Yes, she is currently very rare and goes for even more nowadays than what I got her for.

2. I got the Megahouse MAX Captain Kid figure ITEM #109863 at only JPY 4,500 equivalent inclusive of shipping from a local collector, which is just crazy - because the figure goes for above JPY 8k in the aftermarket and the shipping for the humongous box can reach up to JPY 4k. Another really good deal I got was for the Kotobukiya ARTFX J Grell Sutcliff figure ITEM #236265 - I got him for JPY 8k equivalent from an online collector when he goes for above 20k in the aftermarket. Both figures were preowned but there was no damage.

3. To be really honest, I felt a little underwhelmed with Stardust when I opened her - she's a great figure but personally, the actual figure per se is not worth the total JPY 20k in my honest opinion. She's still pretty though and was a rare grail - so if you gave me a second choice, I would still buy her at the price she came with. I loved the Grell figure - he was worth it and was the last one in the series I had left to collect so I am fond of the figure. The giant Megahouse MAX Kid was too, but I eventually felt his display time was up and I sold him two months ago after 3 years of ownership. Ultimately, I would say I like the Stardust figure better than the other two - but that's mostly for her figure design.

My most expensive is ITEM #60161 which I bought for $280. I think she's a gorgeous and very large figure that will make a nice centerpiece on a shelf, and I'm glad to have her in my collection, but I would not pay that much for her again, mostly because I'm trying to budget better and don't intend to pay more than $250 for a single figure (before shipping) again.

My best deal is probably ITEM #396841 which I got for $128 shipped, about half of which was the shipping cost. I also got ITEM #236103 for $150 + shipping, I believe it was about $50 iirc.

Edit: missed the final question lmao

I think I like them all about equally, though the Sakura and Miku ones slightly more than Melona.

My most expensive figure is currently my POP Cirno, at $162 after shipping. In terms of emotional value, it's worth it, but objectively, it's not; the paint quality is not the best, and the price on the box is ¥6,800, which I feel is more in line with the figure's value.

My best deal is my Naka, which I bought for $80 against the ¥12,000 entry price; I got it from an anime store that prices things really strangely (they have this Megumin but for $120). Considering all of the manipulation that can be done, and the multiple face and hand options to switch, I'd call that a good deal. There were no parts damaged or missing as well.

But if shipping isn't factored into this, I'd nominate my Francesca Lucchini Nendoroid, which was $17 new and without any defects, but before shipping.

In my experience, figures really don't match up with their asking prices, so I get figures based on if I will enjoy them; in that vein, I'd pick Cirno as my favorite. Buying at that high a price required a lot of thought beforehand about whether or not I would enjoy the figure, but it gives me so much happiness that I'm fine with it. If it was a figure of a character that I don't know about, or if it's from a series that I'm not a fan of, I wouldn't buy something at that high a price; but because I love Touhou and it's Cirno, I'm happy with it.

So my most expensive figure would be the Memorial Dress Miku ITEM #637417 - I bought her for $412 on Tokyo Otaku Mode...

...however, before TOM revamped their points system, I got $206 in points. I then used my points + a 10% coupon code and used all my points from Memorial Dress Miku on a Card Captor Figure ITEM #675835. I pretty ended up getting her for free and only had to pay shipping (~$21)
