ALTAiR Arthur Pendragon!ALTAiR Arthur Pendragon!Review

Hello again MFC! It's been a long time since I last posted a review here, for reasons I hardly need to go into, haha... anyway, after multiple delays and what felt like 3,000 years of waiting, today we finally get to sit down with a highly anticipated figure from Alter and Amie!

Today we'll be taking a look at
ALTAiR Arthur Pendragon (Prototype) by Alter!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477365.png
ITEM #604483

I'd had my eye on this figure for a long time--ever since he was first announced at wonfes a few years ago, and I was interested to see what Alter would do with him. The prototype turned out to be so stunning that, despite the tall price, I decided to put money down for him.

This was my first Alter figure buy in a while, and I'd never personally experienced Alter's infamous delays (the previous figures I bought came out pretty close to when AmiAmi said they would). When I preordered Arthur in January of 2019, I honestly did believe he would be out October that year as promised.

Here is a list of things that have happened since I put the order in:
  • Spent 600 quartz trying to get Arthur in the game. Did not get him.
  • Bought a house
  • Bought a car
  • Got engaged
  • Global pandemic
  • Actually did end up rolling him in the game on my 2nd year trying

It's been a wild year and a half waiting for him, but I'm so glad he's finally home ;-; even if DHL shipping was nasty. And, even though each consecutive delay bummed me out, in the end I'm kind of glad he took his time to get here--after all, this would have been a very salt-filled "didn't get him in the game but spent $180 on a scale figure for some reason" review if he'd come out in October or January haha...

Anyway, I'll stop rambling and get to what you're actually here for, which is pictures of hot knights!

"If my sword can be of some help to you, I will devote all I have to being your strength, Master."

Here's how he looks without my phone in the way! His skirts really give him a powerful presence!!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477322.png
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477323.png

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477325.png

Here's a full turnaround (and for some reason the last shot exposed weirdly compared to the others...)

From these pictures it's clear that his skirts add quite a bit of volume in the back; for collectors tight on space, he might be a little more difficult to display. Otherwise, I'm fairly satisfied with how he looks from the various angles. He seemed to be leaning forward a bit right out of the box, but I'm hoping the weight of his skirts will pull him back over time.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477326.png
Close in on his face! His eyes came out bigger than I was expecting them to, but they look alright otherwise. Also, they use a glossy decal instead of matte, meaning that they're more reflective than what I'm used to. (That white streak on his right eye is a reflection from the window, not a paint defect)

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477327.png
I was immediately impressed by the level of detail on his armor and straps. The paint lines are clean, and the smallest details are replicated with extreme care.

A lot of folks in the comments section of Arthur's figure page seemed worried that the paint on the armor would be flat (as on ITEM #603991) instead of metallic like his game art, and if you're one of those people, I'm here to allay your fears: it may not photograph well, but the armor is indeed painted with a metallic finish. In some places it almost looks pearly, with additional airbrush work done to give the armor itself more depth.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477328.png
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477329.png

I really liked the attention to detail on this arm, especially the hair-thin ties and the way the sleeve is sculpted. It really looks like those ties are holding it together! The many layers of armor on his gauntlet are also impressive.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477383.png
For the most part the figure was flawless out of the box, but I did notice a little bit of stray plastic at his waist. It was easy to scrape off with my fingernail, though.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477331.png

I liked the additional strap detail they added in the palms of his hands and his fingers to show how the armor is attached; this kind of thing is present throughout the figure. Rather than just replicating what was visible on the surface in the illustration, a lot of thought was given to how an outfit like this would functionally work.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477337.png
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477336.png

On the other arm, I noticed that the sleeve design is actually the same as his right arm--he's just wearing more armor over it! It's a detail that's hard to catch in the illustration, and I'm glad that figures let us see characters form angles we otherwise wouldn't!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477338.png
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477340.png

I noticed as I was turning him around that one of his pauldrons doesn't seem to be attached in the back? Which I found a bit odd. It's made of a more flexible plastic, but I wonder if it was supposed to be glued down.... I didn't find signs of any glue having come undone, so I assume that was intentional?

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477332.png
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477333.png

And now, I would like to direct your attention to my favorite part of the figure, which is: the amazing sword! The detail work on Excalibur is nothing short of immaculate, and I imagine it must have been a QC nightmare to paint all those little lines and lay all those nearly identical decals... Looking at this sword, it's almost no wonder he was delayed for so long lmao.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477335.png

Here's a look at the base, which has a rougher texture than I expected--definitely more of a worn stone floor than a more polished tile. It took some doing to get him on the base, as his feet didn't quite line up with the pegs right out of the box.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477345.png
If you're wondering how the sword stays in place without any visible pegs or supports, there's actually a veeeeery tiny hole to hold the tip of the sword. The handle otherwise fits snugly in Arthur's hand, and I'm not too worried about it falling out.

aaand an upskirt shot under the spoiler because I couldn't help myself lmao
View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477339.png
I couldn't resist taking a look at what was under the skirts... sure enough, you can see the rest of his armor and his pants! (I'm learning a lot about armor parts from FFXIV; I believe the half-exposed leg armor parts here are called cuisses?)

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477341.png
I tried to capture the look of his fluffy bangs in a photograph, but it's hard to convey in 2-D.... just know that the level of detail is amazing!! I wanna run my fingers through his hair...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477342.pnghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477343.png

Tried shooting from both low and high angles... honestly, he looks great from any angle!!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477344.png
Here's everything he came with! Two swords, an extra mantle, and a little baggie of rose petals (10 in all). It's definitely more option parts than I've had with a scale figure in a while (I think the last scales I bought with optional parts were ITEM #132925 and ITEM #132926 ... coincidentally, these were my previous Alter buys lmao)

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477346.pnghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477347.png
I was very grateful to have detailed instructions for swapping out the mantle, because I probably would have broken something if I'd attempted it without checking orz. To swap out the mantle you have to remove the chest piece and hood. Pull out from the bottom of the chest piece, and then pull the hood piece up, and it should come right out. Then, to put in the mantle, one has to insert the pegs in the opposite order (shoulders first, then chest). I had a lot of difficulty getting the mantle on, because the pegs had warped a little in transit.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477348.png
"I hope I'm living up to your expectations. In this form, with this power, I will continue to fight."

Ta-dah! Here's how he looks with the mantle, rose petals, and extra sword! This form is based on his 3rd (and 4th) ascension art in the game.

One thing to note is that the petals aren't actually anchored to the base at all. On the one hand, this means you can place them wherever you wish. On the other, if your display space tends to get high cat traffic (like mine does) you might end up losing a few of those petals, haha...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477350.png
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477351.png
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477352.png
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477353.png

Here's another turnaround! I really like the extra oomph the mantle adds from behind; it really makes him look like a king headed off to battle! What I like a bit less is how bulky it makes his shoulders look lmao

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477349.png
If I'm being honest, the mantle makes him look hunched a little haha... Between this and the difficulty of getting it on, I probably won't be displaying him with the mantle anytime soon.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477354.png
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477355.png

Some detail shots for the second Excalibur! The top looks much the same, while the tip is inscribed with more runes. Personally, I like the first one better, but the blue and gold is a bold look for a sword. If there had been a less-expensive version of this figure without the optional parts, I probably would have ordered that one instead.

And now, for some fun pictures!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477356.png
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477357.png

Here he is next to ITEM #603991, who I posed to resemble him as close as possible! Much as I tend to only buy one figure of a character, it's so much fun having the tall and the small next to each other! It's also easy to see how much more detail the scale has compared to the nendoroid; nendo Arthur's unpainted palms are going to bother me now lol.

I have no other fate scales to pose him with, so I'll use ones from other series instead...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477358.png
Here he is alongside ITEM #287697, another of my 1/8 scales! Arthur appears a good deal taller than Mikazuki, but part of that is likely due to his thicker base. The blues of their outfits go well together, though!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477359.png
Here he is with ITEM #287698, another 1/8! Kogitsunemaru is probably closer to Arthur's height than Mikazuki. Both of these figures are based on illustrations that don't have a lot of movement, but their sculptors ended up adding a ton more depth to their clothing (and in Kogits' case, hair).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477360.png
Here he is with ITEM #132925, another favorite blue boy of mine! (Though when I went to take Masato out of the display case, I noticed he'd suffered quite a bit of sun damage in the year since we moved, and that really bummed me out). Sun damage aside, the two of them look great together--though I dont think I have room in any of my displays to put them side by side, haha.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477361.png
Lastly, wanted to see how he'd look with ITEM #415011. May is also 1/8, but she's so tiny next to him!!! They really are from different worlds, haha!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477362.pnghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/17/2477363.png

Here's where I'll be displaying him; I decided to move my Touken Ranbu boys into the display case so that Arthur could sit on my desk at least until Merlin gets here

I think that just about does it for the review! It was a long one this time because of all the optional parts, but now we can finally get to the scores!

Sculpting: Sculpting gets a solid 10; I am completely floored by the attention to detail in the sculpt. His hair looks fluffy, his skirts look billowy, and his sword is packed with detail fit for a king.
Painting: Painting gets a slightly lower score of 9. For the most part it looks good (I especially love the paintwork on the sword, and the pearly look of his armor) but I was disappointed that the eye decals were glossy instead of matte. It makes it hard to take pictures of his face in some lighting, because his eyes keep catching the light in unpredictable ways.
Posing: I will also give posing a 10. While normally I would dock points for static or uninspired poses (i.e. just making a figure version of an existing static pose), Alter managed to breathe a surprising amount of life into Arthur's pose. You can almost feel the wind billowing through his skirts and hear the resolute clack of his sabatons on the stone floor. There's something to be said for taking an illustration and using 3D to lift it to new heights, and Alter definitely pulled it off here.
Base: Base gets a 9. It's simple and unobtrusive, with a texture to make it visually appealing. The reason it's short of a perfect 10 is that, while it's nice that the petals were an option, having no way to anchor them down is a major drawback for those who don't display their figures in enclosed spaces. One brush of a cat tail and half those petals would be lost to the carpet. (or shuffling paper, or wayward mouse cord, or... basically, I have a lot of things on my desk that move around lol).
Enjoyment: big ol' 10 for enjoyment here, which is standard for me - basically, I only tend to buy figures if I know I'll enjoy them, and in the end Arthur is no different. It's been a long journey since January 2019, and I went back and forth on whether or not I actually wanted him several times while I was waiting. It definitely helps that I finally rolled him in the game this year, so I don't have to look spitefully at all the money I've spent on Arthur figures (this is my third) in lieu of rolling him.

As for figures I'm looking forward to in the Fate world... I'm DEFINITELY excited for ITEM #604482, whenever he is released from Alter's delay purgatory. If Arthur came out this good, I can't WAIT to see Merlin! Other than that, though, I haven't been keeping up with the Fate figure world so much - I only play the game intermittently, after all, and my attention is on other franchises at the moment. (Ok wait I lied I am a little curious to see how ITEM #945875 comes out...)

My next review will be... whenever ITEM #872642 comes home (she comes out sooner than I thought!). Whether I'll shell out for DHL again or decide to wait for international shipping to recover remains to be seen... (after waiting this long I wasn't willing to wait another month for Arthur, but I could be patient for Dawn.)

If you made it this far--thanks for reading! and I'd love to hear your delay horror stories, if you need someone to commiserate with lol.

Josine2 måneder siden#80584627Thanks for the review! I had held off from preordering Arthur because I found him a bit too pricy, but after seeing your review and finding him for slightly cheaper I bit the bullet and ordered him as well :) I'm also looking forward to having him next to Merlin (and Edmond Dantes!)
Btw I do think that shoulder thing should be attached, the official pictures show as much. A tiny bit of glue should probably do the trick ^^

Thanks for reading!! (and I hope yours reaches you safely :3)

And thank you for pointing out the shoulder thing; I didn't think to check official pictures lmao... luckily I have some gorilla glue sitting around!

Many thanks for that review, I couldn't resist reading it since my Arthur is still at the "order preparation" stage, so it is cool to see someone already got it.

Ah Thanks for the awesome review!! Mine is stuck rn ;-; but seeing your pics makes me so excited!
Congrats on getting engaged also :D

thanks for the review :3c

I'm on the fence since DHL is so expensive on top of the original price tag so I'm waiting for Int'l shipping to return to USA.

He's so pretty ;A;;;

:D thank you for reading! The instructions that came with the figure were a little bit confusing at first, which is why I made a simple image guide to remember how to do it haha.

Glad you enjoyed it, and thank YOU for reading! and of course, always happy to provide >:3

I don't really mind delays as long as the figure will be released eventually. Arthur is my most-times-delayed figure tho, but I think the key to waiting is to not wait - don't think too much about it and the figure will be out before you know it.

Thank YOU for reading!! I hope yours reaches you safely!

And thank you for the tip. You're right, the key is to be patient. :3
