Shirts: To Wear or To Collect?Shirts: To Wear or To Collect?Ask MFC

So I'd recently gotten a couple of Hidamari Sketch T-shirts, and it dawned on me: I very rarely wore the last two I'd gotten, as well as a few other anime shirts that aren't listed on the site. The reason for this is that, as a "T-shirt and jeans" guy, I tend to wear the hell out of some shirts, and for my anime-related ones, I've been pretty worried about subjecting them to that same kind of punishment.

I mean, take one of my all-time favorite shirts for example. It's a shirt with name tags that recite the famous line by Inigo Montoya of Princess Bride fame...

It's not a bad shirt, but after constantly wearing it for a long time...

...Holes are starting to come up everywhere, and it's gotten to the point where I can't even wear the shirt to work anymore, and they've got a pretty lenient dress code.

The only Japanese fandom-related shirt I've had the balls to wear consistently is my "6B" BlazBlue shirt...

...And while it's not nearly as bad as my Inigo Montoya shirt, the design is starting to crack and fade.

For these reasons, I've been extremely reluctant to wear my other shirts, and I just wanted to know if anyone else was in the same boat.

Hanging them up like you would regularly stretches out the collars. My husband collects shirts from the concerts he's attended and taught me this trick. He has shirts that he's had from the 80's...they look like they're brand new!)

I assume that this also helps to protect the images as well as guard against shrinkage?

From the '80s, huh? Well, I do support the '80s.

All right, I'll give that a try.

Thanks for the input everyone.

So I've decided I'm going to start wearing those T-shirts. Plus, I've got enough of them so that I can space them out to only be worn once every two or three weeks to stretch out the life a little bit. Also, I was not aware flipping the shirt inside-out before throwing it in the dryer would make a difference, so I'll have to remember to start doing that from now on.

Also, I'd love to get doubles of the shirts so I can wear one and keep the other, but I don't know how readily available some of them might be for purchase anymore.

If it's possible, you should buy doubles of the shirts you really like. My favorite shirt EVER (is it weird to have a favorite shirt?) is one I got from PAX East last year. I wore it a shit ton, until I noticed that both the image and the shirt itself were starting to fade. So I bought another one off ebay, and saved it. Now I have one to wear, and one for my collection.

It depends for me. If the t-shirts were a regular release (some of them bought at UNIQLO even) I'll wear them, although not as much as my other t-shirts. Those I've bought at Amiami (Sket Dance and Suzumiya Haruhi) I wear a little less though... perhaps because I like them a lot.

Then there's my Fullmetal Alchemist t-shirts which are quite rare, only available through Gangan magazine for a period of time - I don't wear those AT ALL. But that's because my FMA collection takes priority and I don't want to take any risks with it. It really depends on what you want to do with them/how long you want to keep them intact/etc.

Shirts should be worn. I wear every anime t-shirt that I own. Well, except for that t-shirt that came with the limited edition of volume 4 of the US release of Lucky Star. I've also found that wearing anime shirts out in the wild can spark interesting conversations every now and then. For instance, I have a Taiga Aisaka shirt that's sparked comments from "my son really likes those Japanese cartoons" from the cashier at the grocery store to an exchange with an exmployee at a fast-food restaurant who really, really, really liked Toradora, and was very knowledgeable about the show.

I own a lot of anime t-shirts and wear them. I don't have a place to properly display the t-shirts, so the only usefull thing I can do with them, is wear them. :)

I have also been sad because the prints began to fade on a few of my older shirts, but that doesn't stop me wearing them! Wash as cold as possible with the shirt inside out and as Akomei said, it is better for shirts to rest a little in between washes than to wash them every week!

Because the Princess Bride shirt isn't wearable anymore, maybe you can frame it? Or find a nice other way to display it, because you like it so much! ^^

Wear'em dude. Except for maybe one or two fandoms, over time your taste will probably change within the hobby, some will grow and other will fade. Much like the t-shirts. So wear them and enjoy them when you'll enjoy them most.
