Asuna is just the cannon partner of the MC of a very popular show, even if she has the personality of a potato that alone will make you popular.
I don't know the other girl so I can't give my opinion.
Anyway I can't think of a character that I don't understand their popularity, sometimes people have bad taste en masse, it happens.

I know this is a year later, but well said lmao

Well everyone else pretty much explained what's up with those characters, so instead I will share a similar feeling with a MC from a popular franchise: Araragi Koyomi.

I used to not mind him much, but as time went on I ended up hating his guts. However I could understand WHY people liked the little turd. Is fascinating how we can love or hate something that is popular.

For me, my character of choice is Mami Tomoe. I love her personality and her role in the story. She reminds me of some aspects of myself and I'm always happy to see her.

I have a huge collection of figures and goods of just her and I love seeing new things of her.

It usually boils down to the character design or the personality, or both. Just look at Rikka from SSSS.Gridman. She barely does anything in the anime, yet she is insanely popular.

I'm not really the person to ask since my favorite character is from a twenty year old show and even his own creator doesn't give two shits about him and I might be the only person that has any sort of care for him... anyhow, I'm going to echo what everyone else said for the most part but I'll also add that there really doesn't seem to be any sort of set "formula" for what will make a character insanely popular or not, instead it's timing. Tamaki is a good example. So To Heart 2, the sequel to the successful To Heart, isn't what I would consider a fantastic anime. It's not bad either. It's fine, simple, watchable and enjoyable; just nothing to write home about. Tamaki originated from the series and became stupidly popular like it was no ones business and received tons of figures and a nearly cult-like following that lasts to this day (speaking as one of said cultist). As a character she's alright, to put it nicely. She doesn't punch monsters in the dick for a living but unlike what her figures suggest isn't a whore either. She's just... normal? She has her likes, her dislikes, but at the end of the day like the show nothing to write home about.

What I think got her to be stupidly popular was simply To Heart 2 came out at the right time and caught enough attention to gain its following. Tamaki as a character isn't new, and seriously look at the first To Heart and you'll see a character nearly identical to her, but she just became popular at the right time. And same could be said for a lot of stupidly popular characters. Now timing isn't everything because you still need a foundation for your characters (basically they have to be a character; if just left as eye candy people will toss them aside when they're bored). That's why Saber and the Fate franchise are still insanely popular.

Course I'm rambling at this point. But in my view, what gets a character to the insane cult status is a mix of timing, good luck, and of course being an actual fucking character and not eye candy (there can be overlap). I'm sure I'm likely wrong but from my experience that's the trend I noticed. Again, I'm not really good to ask since you have a 50/50 chance of me yelling about Van or yelling about how Nikka and Aleksandra got fucked over by the figure industry for a variety of reasons but figured I could share my two-cents.

Moribundead1 år siden#53281792Part of this actually sounds kinda primitive, to be honest.
Guess it depends on the person, but I can say from experience that it takes quite a lot of depth of a character for me to be a fan of them. Doesn't really depend on character design (except for Touhou girls).
Of the particular characters mentioned by the OP, I know only Shiro, but I have to say that I was impressed by her awesome logical skill. However since it isn't really explained why and she's otherwise lacking depth, it stays at adoration.
All that came to mind as to overhyped "characters" was a game, by name AoOni. I played it and never knew why there was a hype. It's just lacking any kind of story and the characters are ridiculous. It doesn't even have any kind of atmosphere due to the lack of music.
I know a couple other in my opinion overhyped characters and origins, but I guess I have to experience to find out if they're really that lame.
I agree it is primitive in a way but i condensed my main points into those two facts. I could probably write in detail about it but I’ll end up going on for ages. But it still comes back to you lacked an emotional connection, which for you was about depth.
